Love the reference to Antonioni, one of my favorite directors all time. L'Avventura is a spectacular film, one I always find something, some new level or angle, in it on every viewing. I was not aware Ebert earlier disliked his work since I have read his reviews heaping praise on his films. (meaning the later reviews you referred to.)

You point to a general issue with film critics - some are more well versed in the field than others. To be clear diversity of such knowledge is not the only metric for being a worthwhile film critic, but it obviously helps.

I tend to find myself in agreement with critics when there is general agreement among them, but not always. Three Billboards is an excellent example. I get that the critics loved the performances, and the cast. And the focus of the story was also interesting. But for me as a viewer it got lost in the third act, and ended up having a very unclear point to it. This may not have been such a problem in a different kind of film. But Three Billboards seemed very much the kind of film that was making a case and then seems to have forgotten what it was trying to say.

They should have just made it "Best Movie in the First Half of the Year" (i.e., encompassing most of the summer blockbusters) and "Best Movie in the Second Half of the Year" (all the fall Oscar-bait releases).

So, the "gee-you're-swell" Award now gets bumped to the Nerd Awards show maybe? :biglaugh:
Guess "Most Popular" wasn't all that popular after all...
Perhaps they could ask Sean Spicer to come out and explain it...? "...period!"

That's why I stopped caring about The Oscars. When it comes to "Best Picture" it should go to the best picture released in that year, if it is animated so be it.

On that list, I would give a recommendation for:
    Terminator 2: Judgment Day
    Aladdin
    Jurassic Park
    The Lion King
    Toy Story
The Lord of the Rings films
The Dark Knight (probably the best film on the list, for me)
    Toy Story 3
+ I love Harry Potter so I enjoy those, but wouldn't call them brilliant films.

Some of the others have their merits. Titanic is a very technically well-made film, even if it has a lot of flaws.

Agree 100%. Every once in a while the Academy goes BP for a movie that's not "important" - "Silence of the Lambs", "LOTR" - but usually they demand that the film be Serious and Meaningful.

This is why "Chariots of Eggs" beat "Raiders of the Lost Ark" even though the latter is arguably the greatest action film ever made and the former is pretty ordinary...

    6 BP nominees, I think.

A US grosses list would add at least 1: "Forrest Gump"...

On that list, I think only 1 of the movies stinks: "Transformers: AOE".

The rest range from decent to great. I'd agree that "Dark Knight" is probably the best of that bunch, but there are some other really good flicks, too!
