NEW OTIS REDDING 4-DISC BOX SET: COMING FEBRUARY 4TH

Rhino will pay some respect of its own to this legendary Artist during Black History Month, when it releases a new four-disc set showcasing Otis' career.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — THE KING OF SOUL’s arrival coincides with the 50th anniversary of Redding’s debut album, Pain In My Heart, which helped define the sound of Stax Records in Memphis, Tennessee.

This new set features 92 songs and retraces the singer’s career from his meteoric rise to his untimely death in a 1967 plane crash.

The songs reveal the breadth of Redding’s talent, starting with his gift for songwriting: “I Can’t Turn You Loose,” “Ole Man Trouble” and “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” his posthumous #1 hit.

His reputation as a magnetic and dynamic performer is well served by a selection of live performances recorded in 1966 at the Whisky a Go Go in L.A. (“These Arms of Mine” and “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag”) and in 1967 during the legendary Stax/Volt Revue tour of Europe (“Shake” and “Try a Little Tenderness.”)

Redding was also an expert interpreter of other artist’s work, putting his distinct twist on everything from Solomon Burke’s “Down in the Valley” and William Bell’s “You Don’t Miss Your Water,” to the Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and Smokey Robinson’s “My Girl.”

'The King Of Soul' also spotlights his unforgettable collaborations with singer Carla Thomas like “Lovey Dovey” and “Tramp.”

What I'd like to have would be all of his Stax recordings in one box set.

I have had this "Rhino" release [AAD] from 1992 with the bonus tacks "My Lovers Prayer" "The Happy Song (Dum-Dum)" and "I've Got Dreams To Remember" for quite a while obviously. Would love to have all the Stax recordings to go with a box set like the one coming up.

I agree that the Stax Singles collection is essential for any Otis fan. It is stuuning and highly recommended, along with the various live Stax-Volt Review compilations. I'm curious how this compares with the 1993 Otis! box Set.

Is there anything new/different/something that has come out before on this boxset than the great Otis! boxset?

I'm tempted only because I am a big Otis fan but I agree the Stax Singles collection is fantastic.

You can never have enough Otis in your collection.

I don't spot anything obviously new or rare in the track listing, but we'd need a more detailed mono/stereo breakdown to know if any new-to-CD mixes might appear.

It looks like it is limited to material owned by Warner, so it doesn't have anything from the second Whisky a Go Go album or Remember Me or anything pre-Volt.

But there is nothing special on this new box set, so it's an unnecessary box. They could just reissue either of those old box sets and it wouldn't matter.

Now if they made it a COMPLETE Otis box of everything that he released, then it would be worthwhile. Otherwise, it's just the same old product in a new package.

I guess new product like this is expected every decade, but seriously, the previous box set had everything you'd want out of a box set, but if you HAD to have the stuff in stereo, the one before that did the trick. Both sets had excellent mastering. If you want more, you should probably just buy the albums, they're actually all worth having. Personally, I think that's really the only box set we'd need at this point, a complete LP set.

I just picked up The Complete Stax/Volt Singles about a month ago, and it is one of the best compiled sets I've ever heard. I suppose I'll be picking this one up as well. Hope the packaging is better than the Singles box.

The 5 studio albums released when he was alive have been bundled as one of those Original Album Series which would be great for a newcomer. One could probably pick up a couple of live albums (or more) as well and spend less than the new box set. Of course there are issues such as mastering, single edit vs. album and mono/stereo, but it's amazing how inexpensive newbies have it nowadays.

An Aretha Franklin box set is also being issued by Rhino on the same day called Queen Of Soul, but it doesn't have the exact same tracklisting as the previous-titled QOS box set from Aretha on Rhino.

    Press release:

OTIS & ARETHA: THE ROYAL COURT OF SOUL

Rhino Spotlights Otis Redding And Aretha Franklin With
    New Boxed Sets,
The King Of Soul And The Queen Of Soul

Each Four-Disc Collection Available February 4

LOS ANGELES – Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin’s powerful voices continue to be the standard by which all other soul singers are measured. But they also share another bond through “Respect.” Redding originally wrote and recorded the song in 1965 and two years later Franklin’s cover version transformed it into a female-empowerment anthem known around the world.

Rhino will pay some respect of its own to these legendary artists during Black History Month when it releases new four-disc sets that showcase their individual careers. Due out on February 4, THE KING OF SOUL and THE QUEEN OF SOUL both feature over 85 tracks and will be available for a suggested list price of $44.98 each.

THE KING OF SOUL’s arrival coincides with the 50th anniversary of Redding’s debut album, Pain In My Heart, which helped define the sound of Stax Records in Memphis, Tennessee.

Redding was also an expert interpreter of other artist’s work, putting his distinct twist on everything from Solomon Burke’s “Down in the Valley” and William Bell’s “You Don’t Miss Your Water,” to the Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and Smokey Robinson’s “My Girl.” THE KING OF SOUL also spotlights his unforgettable collaborations with singer Carla Thomas like “Lovey Dovey” and “Tramp.”

THE QUEEN OF SOUL creates a rich musical portrait of Franklin’s incomparable run at Atlantic Records between 1967 and 1976. Packed with 87 songs arranged chronologically, the set opens with generous selections from the first five studio albums she recorded for the label – I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You, Aretha Arrives, Lady Soul, Aretha Now, and Soul ’69. Recorded between 1967 and 1968, all five of the albums topped the R&B charts and gave the world classics like “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “Chain of Fools,” “Think,” and the #1 smash “Respect.” The set also mixes in several rare outtakes of songs like “It Was You” from Aretha Arrives and “Talk to Me, Talk to Me” from Soul ’69.

The collection also spotlights the great music Franklin recorded in the 1970s, including the two albums she released to open the decade – This Girl’s in Love with You and Spirit in the Dark. The former boasted an electrifying version of the Band’s “The Weight” with Duane Allman on slide guitar, while the latter featured the hit “Don’t Play That Song.”

Along with several singles from this era (“Spanish Harlem” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water”), THE QUEEN OF SOUL also gathers up several live performances with “Spirit in the Dark” (Reprise with Ray Charles) from Aretha Live at the Fillmore West (1971), plus several songs from her live album Amazing Grace (1972). The latter recording won the Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance in 1973 and remains Franklin’s best-selling album to date.
