  1. Kevin Davis

    Kevin Davis EQUIPMENT PROFILE INCOMPLETE

    Location:

    Two guitarists:
Freddy Koella - played with Bob Dylan in 2003-04. A deconstructionist with an ear for melody and beauty. Perhaps a bit too edgy for Dylan's talented but extremely safe touring band, as he was gone after a few short tours.
Emmett Kelly - plays with Will Oldham sometimes. Another guy with a slightly sideways style that always manages to go to some surprising melodic places.

    Bass:
Bob Cranshaw - Sonny Rollins's electric bass player for many years. Just love his overall sound and vibe.

    Drums:
John Convertino - drummer for Calexico and underrated session player. An unmistakeable and unobtrusive exotic style that adds instant flavor to anything he supports.

Yes. I think Gene is generally overlooked. His over-the-top persona overshadows his musicianship.

Isn't Gene a huge fan of The Beatles? If so, then it's obvious where he got his interesting in-the-pocket bass playing style. Gene is no dummy.

Eric Schenkman – guitar, Spin Doctors. Not being snarky, I think he's really good.
Craig Montoya bass, and Greg Eklund, drums, Everclear. Not being snarky, I think these guys were a great combination.

I like all those guys. But I wouldn't consider any of them overlooked. For example I think most realized Clem Burke was the best drummer in punk/new wave.

    OK, let's go with
Bass - Roger Glover - Deep Purple, Rainbow
Never gets a mention anywhere, but he must have been doing something right.

I thought you meant all three in the same group! That's why I immediately thought of these guys:

    Steve Nieve - keyboards
    Bruce Thomas - bass
    Pete Thomas - drums

Elvis Costello's original backing band, the Attractions.

Schenkman is great! Liked what he did with Corky Laing too.

You're probably right, but that was more or less the point of the thread: not to mention the most virtuoso or creative musicians, but those who were/are very capable but usually don't receive credit for their work.

However, regarding to Chris White, just listen to "She's Not There" and then listen to the Beatles songs from 1964; I think the Zombies song was more complex than anything the Beatles were recording during that year, including the bass lines. Of course, the Zombies did not progress too much afterwards, while the Beatles continued breaking new ground the following years. And it is also true that White's melodic bass lines in Odessey And Oracle may have found an inspiration on McCartney's fantastic bass work in Sgt. Pepper.

Only overlooked by those who have no idea what you're talking about.

Ray Brown according to Discogs has 1769 recorded performances listed as part of his discography. 1 vocal. The guy's an acknowledged master... by those in the know. By those even with a basic knowledge of the genre. ...I'd say.

An equivalent in another genre would be Baden Powell. One of the greatest and most well known and respected guitarists in the world whom I would be surprised if 5% of Americans who genuinely are knowledgeable about music, musicians and even guitarists specifically know of.

"Overlooked" like "best" or "greatest" is always a tough one to navigate.

Are the Attractions really overlooked? I think not; not to my understanding; my interaction with those that appreciate EC.

For Elvis fans, no they are not overlooked - they are very much appreciated. Among general fans of rock/pop music, they are overlooked.

As there's no absolute way to qualify it; I'll simply note your experience as different then mine and where I find you being correct I will attempt to rectify the ignorance. The Attractions are arguably (everything is arguable thank goodness) the best regular outfit that's backed EC in my opinion... even without James Burton.

"Overlooked" like "best" or "greatest" is always a tough one.
