Has anyone ever bought from www.overstock.com? They have the Rhino (I assume) Ultimate Yardbirds (2CD) for $8.99. But it is marked as "RECALL". Why was this set recalled? thanks
I think the track listing wasn't approved, but the disc were printed, and so was the artwork. I believe it had to do with publishing control, not the fact that the disc sounds bad. I can't remember which set of tracks were in question....
From the looks of it, this isn't the Rhino set, the track listing is widely different, and there's nothing from the Jimmy Page-led line-up. The title here The Ultimate Collection, is also different from the Rhino Ultimate Yardbirds. If it's the Rhino collection you're looking for, I don't think this is it. This is in fact a 1999 collection on the Recall label. Haven't heard it, no idea of the sound, or what kind of source tapes were used.
At that price it's a decent set; the sound is typical Yardbirds (nonexistant stereo for almost everything, not a first generation sounding tape in sight save for some Roger era outtakes which sound pretty good) - snap 'er up if you need some Yardbirds added to your fleet...
Recall is a subsidiarry of the British Snapper label. Go to www.snappermusic.com and search the catalogue for info on the Yardbirds cd. Snapper also has Charly and Catfish blues among it's other labels.
Don't worry about the typo ... you are not the first ... nor will you be the last ... that's what the 'Spell Check' and the 'edit' buttons are for.
Overstock has had some great deals, but you have to be very careful, too. I suspect the Yardbirds disc is on the Recall label, not Rhino, as others have mentioned already. For the price, maybe worth a shot. Back in the 80s you'd pay a lot more for some of the crappiest sounding junk imaginable, which you wouldn't find out about until you got it home and....the Yardbirds were among the most ill-served of CD catalogs. This one should be at least OK, if nothing more. ED
Since we're talking Yardbirds I was wondering about the 4 cd set called "The Yardbirds Story". It's listed in the Late Fall edition of the Collectors Choice Music catalog on page 23. Anybody have any info on this set?
Here is a DCC Gold CD on overstock.com that may be of interest to some site members. BTW, I have bought 30+ CDs from overstock.com and none of them have been cut-outs.
Wow, that was quick. All the Linda golds have been snatched up!!! Guess many forum members have quicker trigger fingers than me
LR GH 2 is the hard one to find. Too bad I have an extra of GH 1, not two! But the good news is I DO have GH2!
I wholeheartedly recommend seeking out the following disc from Fuel 2000/Varese: Jeff Beck & The Yardbirds - The Yardbird Years (302 061 196 2). It came out in 2002. Lots of extra neat stuff too. Studio talk, etc. You're A Better Man Than I (extra verse and is an alternate) Heart Full Of Soul and Still I'm Sad (single versions) New York City Blues is the hard to find STEREO mix! Shapes Of Things (double track vocal/single) Pafff...Bum (unedited German version Stereo) What Do You Want (Take 4 Instrumental master) Here 'Tis (Stereo instrumental master) Crimson Curtain (edit of Take 1 and insert-instrumental) Someone To Love (Instrumental master) Jeff's Blues (version 1-instrumental) Chris' Number (take 1 instrumental) Pounds And Stomps (instrumental) There are 20 songs in all...these are SOME highlights! Check it out!
Heart Full Of Soul and Still I'm Sad (single versions) Please 'splain. There is an album version of these two songs?
I shall try...and I am referring to liner notes here, so throw your tomatos accordingly! April 13, 1965 they did a session with a sitar player doing the riff (without Beck)...one week later Jeff Beck duplicated the sitar riff and this second version was released (#2 UK and #9 US). Misleading...because it isn't hard to find! Regarding: Heart Full Of Soul... The liners refer to Still I'm Sad being "truncated" on every other CD issue. The version on THIS CD is the complete single master! Thoughts, Steve? It DOES sound to me that they used better quality (read: lower GEN tapes!) on this CD. P.S. Ron Furmanek did the remix of NYC Blues...back in 1991!!! Where has it been? This CD says it is previously unreleased!
Pat, what's the track length on Still I'm Sad? I have it on several cds with the longest being 3:04 on the Ultimate Rhino issue. Thx, mud-
It was the B side of Shape of Things, I believe. It was on the US LP of "Yardbirds Greatest Hits." I think Shape was released with two different b sides, but i'm not sure.
