Well, this sucks, but I could see it coming, I guess. I really dig our Panasonic plasma TV.

Their market-share is now tiny. Last time I heard it was about 2.5% .

Sharp's U.S. TV business was sold some months back. I think all the U.S. market sets are gonna be made in Mexico.

I have to say, my first HDTV was a Sony, and it's held up extremely well.

That mentions panel production, not TVs themselves. They already use LG Display OLED panels in their high end TVs (as well as LCDs). However, Panasonic has also been retreating from selling whole TVs in the US for some time now. There are top- end sets which they don't sell in-store anymore in the US, but are readily available all over Europe (you can order them online).

Expect to see more Chinese TVs, like Hisense. Vizio was recently acquired by LeEco, a Chinese conglomerate.

Don't know if many people know this, but Panasonic bought Sanyo around six years ago (IIRC mainly to obtain their lucrative rechargeable battery business). About eight months ago I bought a 42" Sanyo flatscreen and was surprised & a bit dismayed to discover it was actually manufactured by Funai, a Japanese OEM manufacturer. I was confused as to why Panasonic, I think the second largest electronics corporation in the world, would outsource one of their TV lines. Now I think I know the reason. :(

It's all getting way too confusing.

I'm surprised. I thought Panasonic was still a big name in TVs. I was also confused to find out VISIO was made in the U.S. I was sure with that name they were some Asian company.

It definitely is and their top-end models are considered benchmark quality (along with Samsung and perhaps Sony - look for Sony's forthcoming ZD9 model, should be an amazing LCD/LED TV). But Panasonic is scaling back its US presence.

    They are now!

Think the demise of the plasma was the death knell for Panasonic that was their most popular product.

I've had my Panasonic plasma for almost ten years now and it still looks perfect. One of the best purchasing decisions I ever made. When it dies I really have no idea what I'll do to replace it.

Large TVs ? Ya would think there would be a demand. Don't tell me I have to buy a 42"TV at my local supermarket in a few years. Two pints of milk and a 4K telly, receipt please.
