It's official now... Not a "TNG" reboot Patrick Stewart to Reprise 'Star Trek' Role in New CBS All Access Series
Oh, boy, this could be great! "Jean-Luc Picards' 2nd Act"! I hope it's a discovery quest of the last phase of his life, instead of all that adventure getting in the way. On the other hand, howabout if he starts every episode giving Worf an apology and excuse why he "juuuust cann't make iiiiiit..." to meet up with him at Quart's, while he just gets drunk and unloads all his miseries while Picard would sit there, looking uncomfortable...
Great news. I loved Discovery and now this. Let the fanboy carping and whining begin about the technology not lining up exactly with ST:TNG and having to pay for All Access.
There isn’t much room to complain about technology not lining up, as this will take place many years after TNG, but I’m sure some will find a way.
The aesthetic of TNG was very ‘80s, at least for the TV show. The movies improved on it somewhat, but technology in Discovery looks very advanced compared with what we’ve already seen in Picard’s time.
I might actually watch this one, but then again in the article is says: "The 'creative' team for the newest Star Trek series includes [hack] Alex Kurtzman, who serves as showrunner on CBS All Access' Discovery", so...I'm ambivalent. If the plots are generic action pieces that don't make much sense then, meh. Because of Picard/Stewart, I'll give it a shot, but I hope they don't tarnish the character's established intelligence, rationality and ethics.
So do you feel that Discovery is generic action pieces? Kurtzman is only one part of the team that works on the show. What will really matter is not Kurtzman but who works with him as well giving the series its unique vibe. Stewart, as an actor, is able to discern quality storytelling and, if he isn't happy, he'll push back for well told stories. I suspect that Kurtzman (who I don't necessarily view as a "hack" simply because he has done some good, bad and indifferent storytelling across his career) will be only one part of the equation. He's so busy working with Universal on their Dark Universe series and others, that I doubt he'll be spending a lot of time once the show starts rolling.
I'm wondering if somebody I used to know from back in my old Santa Clara days will be doing pre-production work for this series like she did for The Next Generation?
It's not the stories I'm worried about but everything else, ranging from the way too sleek production to the other actors' abilities. Time will tell.
The only stories I don't want to see, are the ones where fans would say, "Well, you know, you gotta have one where..." So, no mirror universe, no Borgs, no Wild West themes, no time-traveling back to iconic episodes, no tribbles, no good-ol'-days stunt-casting...and no Data/Pinoccio, sucking all the air out of the plot wishing he were a real boy.
