I wouldn't be opposed to some kind of "Best of the '80s" compilation. But it shouldn't be a part of the Archive series.

Nice overview. One quibble, though: my own preference would be to include the Live Aid and Prince's Trust live material elsewhere, earlier, and keep Tripping to just the core "Lumpy Trousers" band of the time. As such, Tripping could be fleshed out quite nicely with a disc of soundcheck material from that tour. Based on some underground discs of the time and an existing knowledge of what was played, there are some otherwise unavailable gems there that should see the light of day, plus some jams and improvisations that hold together very nicely too. It also would be in the spirit of the actual live album, since Paul chose to sprinkle some of those "trinkets" throughout the album already. Also, I'd guess that putting the "Get Back" tour film with Tripping would be a better idea, with the "Put It There" special (hopefully with extended performance footage and additional songs) on DVD rounding out the Flowers in the Dirt deluxe edition.

(An aside: your list cuts off with Off the Ground, but we can include Paul Is Live as a logical companion piece to that and, in the same vein as the above, probably easily fill another disc with soundcheck material from that tour too, along with the concert in Charlotte as the DVD content, again perhaps with additional material not shown on the TV broadcast at the time for logistical reasons.)

Because in most instances, people cannot agree on which mistakes truly are mistakes. I'll bet you whatever you like that for each track someone describes as a mistake, someone else will find it golden. Just look at those misguided fools who think What's That You're Doing is a worthy track...

Imo the albums released are what they are-warts and all. Don t see any point in changing that and remove tracks that(some) consider not worthy. It s like putting colour on black and white movies. Why?

  6. I've mentioned before, that there really needs to be an "All The Best, Vol 2". But there's the fear that it would delay the Archive series even further...

    Exactly.

You will have to call me 'misguided fool' from now on, because I really like What's That You're Doing. :D It will go nicely with the name that I was given for also liking the other McCartney/Wonder song 'Ebony and Ivory'; Poor Sick Bastard.

I think that this is a very good idea, but that it should be part of a separate project and not part of the reissues series.

I would really like to see a 'McCartney in the 1980's' album as part of a series with a 'McCartney in the 70's' album, and a McCartney in the '90's/2000's' album.
They could take inspiration from Pavement's compilation 'Quarantine the Past', Blur's 'Midlife Crises', Guided By Voices 'Human Amusements At Hourly Rates' and R.E.M's 'Part Lies'.

I feel that they would really help improve the reputation of Paul's post-Beatle work, and if they took inspiration from the albums above, they would not need to include all of hits, and instead could replace songs like Ebony and Ivory and Spies Like Us, with lesser-known gems.

Some People Never Know Wild Life sounds quite wistful!

My Valentine Kisses On The Bottom was already recorded by Madonna in 1985!

Ditto The Lovers That Never Were Off The Ground!

True, that. Now I really have to hope that "Ode to a Koala Bear" shows up on that, so that I have something new to discuss. Or something old. Or just something. Fortunately we have plenty of other people here who provide additional viewpoints and food for thought. We never seem to run out of things to say or angles to explore -- a nice development.

From the guilty pleasure department, I'll add "Dress Me Up As a Robber" to the list. I've always loved that one, even though I felt like I shouldn't admit it. Not that it will happen, but I can see that as a really ripping fun song performed live, with the right arrangement (emphasizing the Spanish guitar and the danceability of its riffs), a groove not altogether unlike "Goodnight Tonight" (which itself is long overdue to be inserted into the setlist).

Dress Me up is the only listenable song on side 2. What's That You're Doing is on my rotation of music for me at the gym. I love the roll off the toms that Paul does and the harmonies at the end.

Hopefully this [cleaned up] and more video footage comes with the Deluxe package but I'm not getting my hopes up. I'm just happy POP is getting a deluxe release. Love Paul quipping, "it's Russless Hearty" (A UK Talk show host; for any non-Brits or those who may not know)

After all, "Ebony and Ivory" was a big #1 hit. Besides, who makes the final decisions as to what a "dicey period" or "weak and/or grating stuff" is? An album is what it is, good or bad -- and should be re-released as it originally was. Although I fully admit that I'm not as keen on TOW today as I was upon its first release, TUG OF WAR was called "McCartney's Masterpiece" in Rolling Stone when it first came out in 1982 (and that praise was from a magazine that usually trashed his previous albums!).

I don't believe it's commonly felt that Paul's 'dicey period' began until after BROADSTREET flopped... say, between 1985 and 1989...

I think Paul has it in his head which albums he wishes to release first, and he's probably swayed with the mindset that TUG OF WAR got great reviews and is considered one of his finest albums (or was). PIPES OF PEACE goes along with TOW, even though POP is a weak followup in comparison. And regardless of one's own personal feelings on any given album, all of them are still deserving of being reissued when we're talking about representing an artist's entire catalogue.

That said, while I personally like WILD LIFE, I think that album is more of a risk to reissue than TOW is. Of course, like all Paul's other albums, WL too warrants re-releasing for the complete catalogue.
