Paul McCartney's positive comments about Black Sabbath. How much into that style is he?

Talking here about his couple of bits of interview in the documentary ''God Bless Ozzy Osbourne'', which I saw on TV yesterday. Sorry that I can’t find the clip, and I don’t even remember much of what he said in detail – I wasn’t expecting him! – apart from the fact that there was no more evil in enjoying BS than there was in watching a Dracula movie . But some of you will know. And for those who don’t, it’s about half an hour into the film.

I began thinking after that about ''Helter Skelter'' and how in my mind a group like Black Sabbath or Ozzy Osbourne’s would have no trouble covering it and making it sound theirs, heavy metal and all that... Which had never occurred to me before... That song is really proto-metal!

...Just don’t tell Paul that he invented the genre... Seriously, it’s cool to hear him recognize it and that group in particular, one of my favorites from that era.

Not an expert but I saw Paul and Ozzy on the Howard Stern set one time... (have no idea, when or why) and Paul gave Ozzy a big hug...a very warm embrace. It may seem oddd but there does seem to be mutual admiration between these two fellas.

    Because he already knows.

I don't think it's odd, Paul was one of Ozzy's biggest inspirations.

I knew that Ozzy wrote that PMcC was his hero.

Paul loves everybody in his old age. Pete Best is great, the remnants of Nirvana is great, Dave Clark Five is great, and now so is Black Sabbath. Stay tuned for his duet with his honorary grandson Justin Bieber......on "Hey Jude", of course. The #1 song for those who carry American Express Cards.

Longevity in the biz respects longevity in the biz.

Also, they're both Live Nation artists, so they probably share a few of the same executives or staff there in common, some of the same people in the concert infrastructure world, and they probably roughly know each other's drawing power/venue size/production costs compared to each other...it's a pretty small world at that level, to be doing it year after year, if you're not a flash in the pan newcomer. Of course they're friendly.

I've always heard Ozzy speak favorably of McCartney, and the Beatles too.

I think being a British rock star they probably crossed paths over the years and became friends.

I always thought the Pete Townsend/Paul McCartney relationship was weird too...but whatever!

There was a clip whereby Ozzy was asked if he could be anyone else for a day, he answered with Lennon or McCartney. The guy is a Beatlefreak. Caught a segment on his show years ago where the camera was scanning and there were a stack of McCartney CD's. I remember seeing Wingspan was on the top.

Ozzy introduced Macca on the Brits for his lifetime achievement award a few years ago. Also have a vague recollection of them together in Maccas Concert for New York doc. Not sure if they crossed paths much before then though

Don't forget that I Want You (She's So Heavy) is essentially a doom song.

And didn't Paul record a bunch of Black Sabbath songs:

Listen To What The Iron Man Said
    Tug Of War Pigs
Deliver Your Children Of The Grave
Heaven and Hell On A Sunday

    ;)

Ozzy probably hasn't gotten enough credit just for writing memorable melodies and hooks. He's just that crazy metal guy. ;)

Ozzy gushes The Beatles in any music related interview he's ever done. When Paul Cook told Ozzy he didn't like the Beatles, Ozzy said, "That's like saying you don't like air."

    The famed Liverpool/Birmingham connection

Both lads from working class British towns who made good.

And Ozzy has never been shy about his love for the Beatles - "no Beatles, no Sabbath" is his-oft repeated quote.

I remember an interview where he said he liked various kinds of music and even mentioned the Sex Pistols. That's Paul.

I always found the Pete Townsend/Jerry Garcia relationship in the 80s to be a lil weird, they pal'd around quite a bit
