People, I love ya but there is no such word as VINYLS. It's "VINYL", no 's' at end.

    Your ATM sells records?

More to the point, you used "ATM" as an entity unto itself rather than as an abbreviation. If you had used it as an abbreviation (Automated Teller Machine), you wouldn't have needed the "machine" after "ATM" as that would have been redundant insofar as "machine" is part of "ATM." You could have said "I"m off to the ATM to buy many CD and Vinyls."

Biking into work today I actually saw a small bumper sticker on a car that read "The plural of vinyl is vinyl" :)

In Italy we use very often the word "vinile" (vinyl) and we do not use the word "record"; in the Italian language, the plural of "vinile" is "vinili" (in English it would be something like "vinyls" ) and here the error is served.

In Italy, the word "record" does indicate an outstanding performance that deserves to be inserted in the Guinness World Records.

I ask you to forgive me for all the times that I used the word "vinyls"...

No. "Compact Disc" refers to a singular item, so it is appropriate to add an "s" when referring to more than one. You are correct with your example of WMD, even if the word "weapon" is singular. We don't say "Weapon(s) of Mass Destructions.

So, adding an "s" to the word "vinyl" is still wrong. :)

The term "weapons of mass destruction" (as opposed to "weapon" of mass destruction) is used all the time.

    See the text here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weapon_of_mass_destruction

As for CD, thank you for the tautology -- CD = compact disk, so CDs = more than one compact disk. My point was, perhaps CD can = Compact Disks just as WMD can = weapons of mass destruction and not weapon of mass destruction.

Your previous post 1162 was not clear.

I am glad to know you are a news junkie (in addition to being an SHTV junkie).
