Worst producer matches are nearly anybody not in jazz produced by Teo Macero

Todd Rundgren was actually the producer though. But, it was a perfect pairing too. After Meat and Steinman were rejected by many record companies, Rundgren was finally the one who understood what they wanted to do.

A worst that has not been mentioned yet would have to be:

    Brendan O’Brien --- Bruce Springsteen

  4. Perfect Matches:

    Bill Bottrell producing David Baerwald
Gary Katz & (B&F) producing Steely Dan
    Nigel Godrich producing Radiohead
    Alby Galuten producing Jellyfish
    Jon Brion producing Aimee Mann
    Eddie Offord producing Yes
    Mutt Lange producing Def Leppard
Ted Templeman producing the original Van Halen

    Some imperfect fits:

Roy Thomas Baker producing Yes (and later Jon Anderson)
    Chris Tsangarides producing Thin Lizzy
Todd Rundgren producing XTC (even though the songs were good)
David Foster producing Chicago (and I like some of Foster's work)
    Geoff Workman producing Toto
The Team that produced Brian Wilson's S/T album (good songs, though)
    Marcus Miller producing Miles Davis

  5. Roy got horrid drum sounds. Journey may or may not have had better songs in their 80's line-up, but they certainly had better sounding records.

How about Arif Mardin with Ringo Starr...?

While Richard Perry was a good match for Mr. Starkey, Arif Mardin's disco-oriented production didn't do Ringo any favors.

The ex-Beatle's solo career never could recover from the Ringo's Rotogravure / Ringo the 4th debacle.

I'll never understand why Phil Lesh picked Don Gehman for his solo record a few years ago. I love the work of both but they just didn't seem to be a good match at all.

I'll second Springsteen and Brendan O'Brien. I really hope Bruce goes with someone else next time. I'd love to see him work with Rick Rubin.

Although Rundgren certainly didn't get along with XTC, even Andy has gone on record as stating that "Skylarking" was one of their best realized (if most contentious) albums.

IIRC, he produced some of the bonus tracks on "Drama" but didn't do a whole album by himself.

Interesting comments by Padgham in the new McCartney biography about working with Macca--evidently Padgham is/was a HUGE 10cc fan and he thought that Macca and Eric Stewart would make an ideal writing team...at least they did on paper but when he heard the demos he was aghast at the quality of songs they produced.

He also told Macca that some of the songs weren't up to snuff and had Macca ask him how many hit records he had written. Padgham held his own to his credit. I think that if it had been Padgham and Lilywhite it might have worked.

  17. Todd also did a lot of the arranging and played guitar. He is the unsung hero of Bat Out Of Hell.

True, but he helped them make great hit records that worked well on radio.

    Not great matches:

    Rick Rubin and AC/DC
    Rick Rubin and Weezer
    Rick Rubin and Metallica

Not so sure if this is great matches:

  22. He started what would have been Drama, and the sessions collapsed. Tapes indicate they were going nowhere.

James Brown/ the JB'S , Fred Wesley,Maceo Parker, Bobby Bryd, Hank Ballard,Lyn Collins,Ect. He was a really good producer who i think is very underated.

  24. Another bad match was Nile Rodgers & Duran Duran. Strangely, I thought Bernard Edwards and Power Station was a good one.
