The final scene, with the close-up of Michael pondering his life, is what stays with me of all the great scenes in G2.

Not the most famous scene in the film, but the one that always speaks to me:

  3. The "cricket batsman scene" in Syriana.

I don't want to give anything away, for those who haven't seen that film.

I used that one for 20 years as a joke. There's a hundred great lines in that film. The other one I always like was the one with Mr. Burnstein reminiscing about the girl he saw standing by a boat many years earlier, and how he often thought about her, even though he never actually met her. That's a wonderful scene.

It's not the whole Spinal Tap scene but this one line pulled out of the air is simply perfect:

NIGEL:Seems that “Sex Farm” is on the charts in Japan...

DEREK:Spinal Tap’s recording of “Sex Farm”

The Coen Brothers' "Miller's Crossing" is a collection of perfect scenes with at least one perfect set-piece (The "Danny Boy" assassination attempt)

Full of tension, and speaks to the random nature of how violent men might find you, unawares. Great acting here, especially how the clerk quickly realizes he's dealing with evil and tries to diffuse the situation. (And, in Coen Bros fashion, it's darkly humorous).

And the greatest thing about it is that Michael's silence leaves the interpretation to the viewer. When I was younger I felt he was reflecting his mastermind maneuvering of the Corleone legacy. As years have come and gone it now seems he's reflecting more on what it cost him to end up powerful but essentially alone.

Young Adult (2011). Elizabeth Reaser explains to Charlize Theron that she teaches autistic children how to recognise people's emotions by looking at drawing of facial expressions.

The ending of CINEMA PARADISO. The meaning behind the montage of images is what gives the scene its emotional impact. Toto’s reaction never fails to bring a tear.
