I was going through my CD collection yesterday and came across two copies of the original CD release of Roy Orbison "A Black and White Night". The two copies were the result of a merged CD collection when i got married a few years ago. I have watched it a number of times on DVD but hadn't listened to the CD in quite a while so I put it into the player, got a few seconds of music and then a few hiccups and skips and then nothing. I examined the CD and it is not scratched. I put it through a gentle cleaning cycle and tried again with the same result. I tried the second copy and got they same exact result. Again it was not dirty or scratched. This CD was released in 1989...and I have had it since then. I have had this happen on one or two other older discs in my collection. I read that this might happen but guess I was a little surprised to see it happen with two pristine copies of the same CD. Of course this gives me a good excuse to buy the "new" re-mastered version of this CD, but I am still disappointed that these CDs have apparently self destructed. Anyone else starting to see this happen with their CDs?...or this particular CD? Ironically, I have LPs from the 50s and 60s that sound better than ever.
