An unsubstantiated billboard.com story appeared, and was quoted, in a fan post, on a Who egroup titled, "Odds&Sods-Digest - Number 3052 "...

">Pete Townshend has inked a worldwide subpublishing
    >deal with BMG Music Publishing. Under the deal, BMG
    >Music will subpublish his recent and new solo
    >material, as well as much of the catalog of the Who,
    >including the songs "Baba O'Riley," "Behind Blue
    >Eyes," "Love Ain't for Keepin'," "The Kids Are
    >Alright," "The Relay," and material from the "Tommy"
    >album, such as "Pinball Wizard." BMG Music will also
    >represent writers who sign with Townshend's Eel Pie
    >Publishing firm. (Billboard Bulletin)"

An explanation of subpublishing from a post in OddsNSods egroup...

Subject: The Wonderful World of Subpublishing

Its been a hundred years since I worked in the music
publishing biz and the memory isn't quite what it used
to be but just a quick add-on to what Scott Schrade
    wrote:

Current practice among almost all U.S. publishers is
to employ subpublishers for the services they provide
above and beyond straight collection of income. With a
financial interest, the subpublisher can closely
monitor the local record company, make sure that the
local performing and mechanical rights societies have
the titles, authors, and publishers registered
properly, and provide every nature of assistance to
the original U.S. publisher with respect to the
protection and beneficial exploitation of the
    copyrights within the territory.

Which I'm assuming if you hold your publishing in the
UK that you hire a subpub for US. I worked in the US
so I always worked on doing subpub deals in Europe.

Like Scott said, Pete probably got an advance (which
is a 100% probability) against his future collection
on his publishing and from what I can tell Pete has
306 titles with BMG Music Publishing.

BMG Music Pub is a division of BMG Entertainment which
parent company is Bertelsman Group (which I think many
many moons ago had acquired RCA records.)

Looking at the catalog it looks like there are quite a
few demos that still have not been released on any Who
LP. Unfortunately I didn't see anything new - at
    least not yet!

Please correct me if I'm wrong about this
    information!!!
