Philles stuff has always sounded like someone put a blanket over a speaker and recorded the sound into a microphone. Apart from that, he made some great songs during that time, and If I can find this boxset at my local store, I might think about getting it.

Anybody else have any thoughts about tape hiss?

Hiss was always a factor prior to Dolby A (1968-1970). To me, it's just a part of the way things sounded from that era. "Clean" was not a factor for Spector productions; it was all about punch, feel and emotion.

My question was why can't I hear any tape hiss on the Spector CDs. I assume it was filtered out. I wonder if it should have been left in.

    c'mon now, stop having a hissy-fit!

just playing with you, I don't know why there is no hiss, but it's a good question....

BTW, I see the Fabulous Ronettes has a July 31 release date on Amazon....but ONLY for vinyl...what's the deal? does the album only appeal to the old, vinyl-loving customers, in the minds of the record companies?

Why isn't the Xmas album on that box? It's probably the only thing from that era that was conceived as an album.
