The scary thing is, Michael's more obsessive fans REFUSE to discuss this matter unless you're of the opinion (which they are) that Michael's death was murder and that he was an absolutely flawless human being.

Jesus, I got banned from a forum full of them for mentioning he wore a wig.

Both are 100% true... though just a partial wig. I was shocked to find out that Jackson's body was riddled with arthritis, he had a half-dozen false teeth, plus permanent tattoos for his eyeliner, lip color, and (receding) hair line. Very sad to realize he succumbed to age as much as any 50-year-old guy.

The Enquirer has a nasty headline about Phil Hoffman that I won't repeat here, but suffice it to say, they're going off the deep end for scandal. What's interesting to me is that I don't think a single person has come forward and said that the actor was anything but the nicest guy in the world. Not a bad word against him. It's very sad when somebody this talented and decent has demons that destroy his life.

I really disliked The Master, but Phillip Seymour Hoffman was totally brilliant in it. I totally bought him in that role.

The 'media' is not a single-minded monolith. The New York Post and The New York Times are both 'media,' but that's where the similarities end. Yeah, the bottom-feeders (the Post, the National Enquirer, TMZ, the tabloid-cable-TV shows, etc.) will likely cover this death in an insensitive, sensationalistic manner. No surprise there. But those companies have almost nothing in common with, say, the Omaha World-Herald, or the Milwaukee Journal, or the Chicago Tribune, or NBC News -- in other words, the hundreds and hundreds of legitimate news outlets that most definitely are not feasting on PSH's corpse to generate more cash for their coffers.

Now, maybe you are seeing a lot of unseemly exploitation of this death, but if so, you have only yourself to blame because you're deliberately choosing to get your so-called 'news' from trash-peddlers rather than from legitimate news providers.

I'm not thrilled about the TMZ playing up the Hoffman "junkie death porn" angle.

isn't this a full wig 3 months before he died.

    hello brother,:D
first of all I do not watch the media, read the media I hate the media...that said...I only have one problem: my lovely wife watches, reads and parrots it all to me! and I love her so.:)
oh yes, you left out the biggest creature of them all...Diane "the Million Dollar A Month Gal" Sawyer out of the "will likely cover this death in an insensitive, sensationalistic manner".

and actually the are one huge beast...they all use the same BUZZ WORDS...it's incredible when you see a montage of them spewing crap out of their pie holes!
years ago I enjoyed the media they were mostly informative and had no agendas or bias...at least not enough to piss me off so much.

Well, if you're not watching or reading the media, your opinion of the media is ... well ... uh ... perhaps not as informed as it might be.

Which is not say some of your criticisms aren't valid. God knows, some of them are. I remember being so angry I wanted to throw my TV out the window when I saw Sawyer interview Michael Jackson and his then-wife. This was 20 years ago. She desperately wanted the two of them to speak about whether they actually had sex, but didn't want to sully herself by asking such an offensive and blatantly improper question. So on camera she literally played them a videotape of fans posing the question, and then turned to them looking for a response. Good god. If you're going to drag your interview subjects (and your viewers) down into the mud, don't stand there and pretend that you're above it all... You can't sling mud by proxy and then claim innocence.

But again, I think you've gotta ignore the bad actors out there and get your news from legitimate providers.

I don't know why some people think of the news media as this homogenous, single-minded creature that does the bidding of one dark overlord or a cabal of east coast elitists. (Well, Rupert Murdoch probably qualifies as a dark overlord and a disciple of Satan, but other than him...) :)

I'm glad you can understand my disdain for Diane...but, my wife is like a "news" current events encyclopedia...and the TV is in the background so I'm still hearing it. she loves discussing the "news" with me...hey! I love her man...what can I do? she want to share and is always ready to hear my rants as well...so I'm not totally out of the loop as much as I want to be.:) and yes, we talk to each other a lot!

Could be. The official autopsy report for Jackson reported he was balding in the front only, plus a bald spot where he was burned in the 1980s. My guess is he could either wear a full wig or just a small toupee, depending on how much hair & makeup work he had before getting out on stage. You wonder why the wig didn't fly off when he did those dance moves...

What about the legitimate trash-peddlers? :sigh:

LOL, they didn't like me mentioning that he had false teeth either.

'Cause, you know, he was somehow a totally infallable human being.

Yep. Even if it's true, they should shut the F up. No matter what reason Phil Hoffman died, he deserves more respect than speculation like this.

I really loved The Master and this scene was the first thing I thought of when I'd heard Phillip Seymour Hoffman had died. This scene choked me up when I first saw it, and when I watched it again after hearing he died.

This was filmed at an old school here in Berkeley (though in the movie they're supposed to be in London).

Speaking of The Master -- I'm somewhat surprised there has been no public comment from Paul Thomas Anderson, who cast Hoffman in all but one of his films. I haven't seen him mentioned as a guest at the memorials yesterday and today either, though that doesn't necessarily mean he wasn't there. He's a pretty private guy these days, though.

Added: never mind second part, just saw him mentioned in a Daily News story about the wake.

I want to watch some PSH movies this weekend. I own about 20 of his films on DVD, so I have lots of choices. But I have to find one that my wife doesn't object to. That probably means we're going to end up watching "Red Dragon". She doesn't appreciate the fine arts. I think I'd like to watch "Love Liza", where he plays a man addicted to inhaling gasoline fumes following his wife's suicide. I'd wouldn't mind seeing Phil in "Magnolia" but I'm not sure I have enough free time for a film of that length.

I received my new issue of "Entertainment Weekly" in the mail today, with the inevitable PSH cover. *sigh*

I'm just kinda mad about the whole thing. I know addiction is a complex issue and its a disease and all that but dammit, why couldn't Phil do something.... anything... to prevent this horrible conclusion?
Its such a shame. I feel so bad for those kids.
