Aha. I must have been logged into my account. I had grabbed all the mp3 downloads when they were free.
It's definitely worth a listen, but not as interesting as other longform jams they have done like the festival soundchecks or latenight surprise sets. "The Victor Disc" has some similar sounding jams (one just labeled "35 Minute Jam"). Like much of the big 2.0 jams, they keep pushing forward, sounding meandering at time, and occasionally hit a bright spot. I wouldn't spend money on the Headphones Jam unless you are really looking for something you haven't heard before. Tons of other great shows available and worth your entertainment dollar.
Always kinda liked phish in high school. Listened to all the studio albums, but never really dug deep into the live stuff (Besides official stuff like "live in Brooklyn"). Any suggestions for the Crème de la Crème?
Opinions vary greatly depending on the era/style of Phish you most like. From my perspective, you can’t really go wrong with anything from August 93, December 95 or Fall/Winter 97. Personal favorites include 8/13/93 and 8/14/93 (both high energy summer 93 shows...pay attention to the 8/13/93 Bathtub Gin and the 8/14/93 Run Like an Antelope), The entire 12/31/95 show is superb (some say best ever of the 1.0 era...sometimes I agree) and the Hampton/Wilkes-Barre Box 11/21-11/23/97 is must-hear. I’m also partial to set 2 of 12/6/97 Auburn Hills which I think may be their strongest 2nd set of the 1.0 era. One of the “Live Bait” series has the Bathtub Gin from Rupp Arena on it which is a fantastic piece of music by Phish and a must-hear. I also highly recommend the Chalkdust Torture from New Haven 12/2/95...outstanding. In general, not a big fan of the Phish 2.0 era. Lots of greatness abounds in 3.0 though my ears have become more attuned to other things these days...the infamous Tahoe Tweezer is the best thing I’ve heard from 3.0. My first Phish show was 25 years ago yesterday...good times!
For a good start: 1993: LivePhish 05.08.93 (Durham) 1994: LivePhish Vol. 13 (Glens Falls, Oct 31) 1995: Live at Madison Square Garden (NY, Dec 31) 1996: LivePhish Vol. 15 (Atlanta, Oct 31) 1997: LivePhish Vol. 11 (Denver, Nov 17) 1998: Island Tour (Nassau/Providence, Apr 02-05) 1999: still need to listen more to form an opinion... 2000: LivePhish Vol. 4 (Fukuoka, Jun 14)
Giving a bit of further consideration, I’d add the Island Tour 4/2 through 4/5/98 which I hear as an extension of Fall 97...great run. I’d also add the LivePhish show (I forget the exact number) that has Denver 11/17/97. Strong show and apparently a favorite of the band.
Took advantage of the discount at LivePhish and got the following shows: Colorado 88 Dec 6, 1997 Aug 31, 2012 Oct 31, 2014 Jul 23, 2017 Jul 29, 2017 Jul 30, 2017 Aug 5, 2017 Aug 6, 2017 Live Bait Vol 9 I’ve got Phish for a while....
Think I read somewhere that Live Bait 5 is considered to be the best of the Live Bait series. Is this the common view? Thanks.
I don’t know if it’s the best, but it’s certainly the longest and well worth the money if you don’t already have it.
I pulled the trigger on the $17.77 8 CD Amsterdam box. That was quite the value, I must say. It's all ripped and ready to go. Haven't listened to it yet, but soon.
Both of these releases have excellent an Stash. I recently picked up: Star Lake 98 dvd Hampton/Winston-Salem 97 Vegas 96 Niagara Falls Colorado 88 Live Phish 12/07/1997 Trey Paper Wheels I’m set for a bit as well (at least that’s what I told my wife).
The Amsterdam box is great stuff all the way through. I was front row at the February show in that box.
I know. I almost tagged you in my post, but I didn't want to be a pain in the Amsterdam. Well, I didn't remember which show you were at, but I knew you went to at least one of these. My friends you met once were at the Japan club show on Live Phish 4. I was about to type that I've never seen them anywhere other than the U.S.A. but I did see them in Toronto years ago. The border police searched my car because I told the guy at the border booth where we were going. Oops.
I need to pick up that Japan release, I have a hodgepodge of the original Live Phish releases but not that one. I believe our own @ThirdBowl was at the latter two Amsterdam shows. My other February '97 Europe show was at Le Bataclan in Paris, which was smaller than the Paradiso and much later became a sadly infamous venue. For future border crossings, you are "going on a fishing trip". I remember being very cautious crossing the border for the Hamilton GD shows in '92 back in the day.
We got stopped when entering France years ago. Five young dudes in a chevy van with a bong clearly visable in the windshield. We came from Amsterdam the night before, but we didn't tell them that and it was only tobacco in the bong so they let us pass after five min. I think it was my brother who was riding shotgun and had the bong out. It didn't happen again
Despite bongs being sold as being for tobacco use for my entire lifetime, I have never seen or heard of one actually being used for tobacco consumption. Until now, that is.
I think that might be the only time I've seen that too. It was back to the other green plant once we arrived in Spain...
That really was a deal - great shows and the sound quality is really good too. You're on the back of the worm!
