Photo Printers - Any experiences

I'm playing with the idea of getting a photo printer that prints A3 (12" x 16") - how do inkjets perform these days , how are they in terms of archival quality and what is the image quality like ? Anyone have experiences of other printer types that don't cost as much as a house. Any thoughts and recommendations greatly apprecated

I've never tried printing anything that big at home. My Canon i850 photo printer is fantastic. 8X10 prints look and feel like they've just come from a photo lab (with the proper media of course). It might help that I also use a Canon digital camera (I've owned three and they've all been fantastic).

 

I use an older deskjet 890 and it does pretty good.
The new ones are much better.
I have my eyes on the new Olympus Dye sublimation printer $499 plus at least $1 a print Ouch! or a Dye sublimation printer.
Wonder when HP will have something better - I do prefer HP printers.
