Hi - new member. I have so many 5.1 releases and I still get giddy as a school girl (no offense to school girls) when a new 5.1 release is announced.

I’m looking for a reel to reel tape of Animals. I’ll hold my breathe. Or maybe not.

I read something somewhere they have Animals with different lyrics music and arrangements somewhere and hopefully this would be a part of the release as well . Anybody else hear this ?

An early mix of Animals surfaced a few years ago with a few different lyrics and Roger taking most of the vocal duties on Dogs. I sent the recording to Andy Jackson a few years ago for consideration/reference to be included on a future release such as this one. Whether or not the band already has a copy or will choose to release this in conjunction with the 5.1 release is still unknown.

Welcome. I'm a surround-head myself, though more modest collection I imagine.

This is a great place populated by a wide variety of characters. Some do snarl, so don't take it too seriously- just find the ones that you connect with and try to ignore the noise.

It's a huge place and there's tons of knowledge on every aspect of A/V hardware and software. Feel free to ask any questions or for help w/ any issues. Forum members are very generous with their advice.

Or just check out the threads that interest you and talk about the hobby we all love. Tons of ways to find your thrill on Hoffman Hill.

    Enjoy the panopoly.

PS I'll speak for myself, but I believe I'm echoing a general sentiment: folks in this thread don't see this release as just another release, but a long-awaited one.

    Happy Trails!

I got so excited when Roger's slip of the tongue was made public the other day. The nurses here thought I had porn smuggled in for me, again. That night they increased my Ambien. Next day, I was up-and-at-'em again though Brother. Animals in 5.1. For a while there, I thought we might never get it.
Sure hope they don't take too long.

lol again. Love it when poeple tell tales on themselves (though I'm not sure if your joke doesn't include this being fictional).

    Regardless, good one.

I can't think of better Christmas presents for myself than a remixed White Album and a remixed Animals. They're both at the top of my list.

Strangely, there aren't that many photos in the Animals sections of the Shine On book nor Storm's Mind Over Matter book (both look to use the same images of the deflated pig, set-up, etc.). This is especially puzzling given that there was supposed to be a team of photographers there trying to get the cover image.

Anyway, this seems as good a point as any to pose the question: why did they start using an alternate cover image?

    First some links:

    Hipgnosis: Animals - album 1977

Blog post on Animals and Battersea Power Station: Pink Floyd “Animals” Album Cover Pig Photo At Battersea Power Station

From the Hipgnosis link, we get the original album cover:

but on the 2011 CD (and possibly other, earlier versions?), there is a different cover image:

So, why the change? And when did it first happen?

Moreover, from the blog post, here is the alternate cover in a less cropped version:

Those two pics don't look different to me. I mean, they are the same 'composition of pics' Thorgerson and/or Waters made back in 1977 probably.
It's just the coloring and contrast between the two. The first one has a more darker contrast and slight green tint while the other 'breathes' more with natural colors.
The recent vinyl reissue (Grundman remaster) looks even more bright and bluish.

Btw, I think maybe Waters has most of the session photos after he took over designing the album cover in the final stage. Just a guess, of course.

    Look at the vehicles!

They may well have been masked out of the original cover, but it would not explain why an unmasked version was later introduced -- one would think that an artwork master would be created, and everything would be derived from that.

[Edit: should add that different crops could be due to LP vs. CD vs. MD vs. cass. packaging constraints, and color variations are to be expected.]

The other floyd 5.1 are fantastic, and I am so excited about animals. I am slightly cautious about 2 things... Waters says "I think 5.1" and, how long has it been since Guthrie mentioned The Wall in 5.1...

I'm hoping they planned for this to come out during the 40th anniversary last year and it is only slightly behind schedule. Fingers crossed we might get The Wall for it's 40th next year.

That would be great, because that would put them right on schedule for their planned 40th sacd for the wall next year!
