I also have the K2 of this album and the SACD and have made the same comparison. I certainly preferred the SACD and have taken the CD to work so I can listen to it there. This is one of my favourite albums and I was very impressed by the K2; but knocked out by the SACD.

Actually, it's March 24th in UK/Europe and March 25th in the US. They were at one point saying this would be delayed until April 1, but that is not the case.

Yeah, I kinda don't have all half-dozen or so discs that have the same matrix number. But thanks to the miracle of PCs and the internet, we can certainly determine if all the discs use the same master. Remember how we found that the Ultradisc I and Ultradisc II are digitally identical?

Yeah, people said the same thing about the Ultradisc I and Ultradisc II. Your assertion that different masters were used (and that the Capitol versions are a generation removed) is a lot like the Ultradisc debate, and we all know where that ended up.

And one industry source said that Supertramp was dubbed onto part of the original DSotM master, and another industry source says it was not. A lot of times there are a lot of different 'realities' flying around.

Actually, I missed that one! I received a CD-R of the UDI version from a kind forum member earlier this week... is there a difference between it and the subsequent printing? (or, at least, what's the consensus?)

I only have the 20th Anny version to compare, and to my ears the MoFi is easily the better of the two.

And since Guthrie/Sax did the 20th Anny version... uh, what went wrong? I have to say that I don't think they did a very good job, and I'm not exactly sure what this means regarding the upcoming SACD. I'm fairly certain it will sound improved (ahem, it damn well better), but I can't help but think "what if MFSL was doing the SACD?"

(*Of course, that'd likely mean "no multichannel", which is a huge selling point for me with the new release, but I'd be surprised if I end up eschewing the two-channel altogether.)

I should point out that I love every Doug Sax mastered album in my collection... except the 20th Anny disc of "Dark Side". And I kinda wonder what I'd think of his and Guthrie's work on "Ummagumma" (which I'm essentially satisfied with) if there was an MFSL or DCC to compare.

It could be a counterfiet CD. They are typically made in those countries. That would also account fopr the very shrill sound.

The Ultradisc I and II are digitally identical. Some people still feel the UDI sounds better (which is not beyond the realm of possibility, but nobody can claim that they are from different masters).

    Thanks, Michael!

And I hope this is all moot come 3/25... :)

    In what way, exactly?

I would think that the easiest, cheapest thing for a bootlegger to do would be to make a digital clone. Or are you saying that a cheaper manufacturing process somehow adversely affects the EQ?

No, but pirated CDs, not to be confused with bootlegs, are unpredictable, even with digital.

Yes apparently so as some the London Stones CD's from the 80's were pressed there.
