    DSOTM new EMI LP

Since this issue does not concern SACD buyers I decided to start a new thread. There has been some confusion about what mix will be used on the "soon come" EMI LP re-issue.

This is a quote from the current description at Red Trumpet:

"The LP will feature the newly remastered version of the album prepared by Pink Floyd producer/engineeer James Guthrie, who went back to the original 16 track master tapes of Dark Side of the Moon to prepare the new editions at his Das Boot studios in South Lake Tahoe. The art designer of the original Dark Side of the Moon album, Storm Thorgerson, has contributed some new artwork for the 30th Anniversary Edition."

So is it the original mix or the newly remastered mix?

    Anyone?

You are speaking of the upcoming British EMI LP release, correct?

It is not a new mix, it is the original mix. I have not actually heard it, but it was cut at AcousTech by Doug Sax, Kevin Gray and James Guthrie from the original Dolby-A master tape.

And I believe it is the same for the SACD release as well, the only differences being that the SACD will also contain a new, 5.1 multichannel mix, and will feature the reworked cover art whereas the LP will feature the original cover art.

Kevin did it? Hmm. Interesting. I wonder if Doug and James let him do his job?

The art on the LP will be how it's always been on LP. The straight Storm design as in 1973.

The LP will be astounding... I personally can't wait...

Yeah, I appreciate its directness. Of course I'm probably still going to get it.

Fellas, it could be WONDERFUL. Let's wait and see!

Doug Sax brought his vacuum tube playback machine, James brought the master tape and his outboard tube EQ gear. Kevin used his cutting lathe and his personal Dolby A units.

    It could be great!

Chad Kassem likes the test pressing:

EMI and Doug Sax Choose AcousTech for Dark Side LP

One of the largest labels could have gone anywhere to remaster one of the world's most important records…They went to AcousTech Mastering.

EMI hired Doug Sax to handle perhaps the most historic master tapes in pop music. Sax, long-renowned as a mastering guru, set out to produce his masterpiece on LP. And so he brought his MCI JH-110 transport with custom heads and tube electronics to Camarillo, California, where Kevin Gray had assembled the best-sounding mastering and cutting lab that Sax knew of — AcousTech. His decision paid off.

Here at Acoustic Sounds, we spent Monday morning critiquing the resulting test pressing. When we first learned of EMI's decision to reissue Dark Side on vinyl, we along with many of you worried that they would go the usual route of major labels, and we'd all have yet another mediocre-sounding reissue. We're thrilled to be to the first to announce that this time the majors got it right. This is it! All of the dynamics, clarity, warmth and air…This surpassed our highest expectations, which believe us, were quite high.

We've already sold more than 300 preorder copies of the Dark Side LP. Now that the mystery is over and this is a bona fide audiophile record, we're likely to sell thousands. We've been told that the LP will be pressed on 180-gram vinyl in Holland. Hopefully, EMI will keep this in print for a long while, but knowing the majors' track record with vinyl, don't bet on it. Now's the time to act.

    Thanks Steve.

I bet this is the same gear they used for the SACD transfer.

As Steve said, it could be great. It may well be that you wouldn't want to hear a straight transfer of the master. A mastering engineer's job is to make it sound good, that's what Steve does and that's what Doug Sax does. While Kevin or Steve may have done things differently, it doesn't mean that it is not going to sound good. Additionally, I believe Doug Sax did the original LP.

Nice pictures of the infamous tape at Chad's website!

    Dark Side Remaster

Although I would like to personally slap the s&#t out of Doug Sax for putting his greasy fingers all over the ORIGINAL MASTER TAPE smack dab in the MIDDLE of the reel of tape! At least use some gloves. Jeez! :realmad:

Nah, it looks like tape on the right side of the picture, but it is the hub underneath the reel.

I don't think Doug Sax was involved with the original LP issue, was he?

Why wasn't this done at the Mastering Lab? After all, Doug Sax is part owner.

I guess Kevin's vinyl cutting gear is better.

Engineered by Alan Parsons. Crazy guys...you all knew that. :p

Don't know the mastering engineers for various countries, though.
