What about Episode V: The Pirates of Caribbean Strike Back?

I'm about to leave for the show in a few minutes to go see this. I'm hoping for this one to be better than the previous two and at least as good as the 2nd one. I know it won't be nearly as good as the first one. Though, if I'm entertained, I will be happy regardless.

Do you need to have seen the fourth movie to appreciate this one? as in are you missing anything?

Nah, not really. There are bits at the very beginning and very end that probably require a knowledge of the first three movies (most specifically the third) to mean anything, but nothing much from the fourth film much is referenced.

A fun movie. Those who loved the first film may believe it is the best since. Those who didn't like the last three films may believe the same.

Yep. I agree. I just got back and this movie was the best one since the first one. Fully entertained.

My local paper gave it a 3 out of 4 stars and many other reviews have given it favorable reviews also.

I thought Geoffrey Rush and Javier Bardem were really good in their parts and the two young actors were good in their parts also. As stated earlier in this thread, Johnny Depp does seem to be playing a "Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow" impersonation. More like a parody, it seems, than in previous films (Maybe taking the "drunken effeminate pirate" a little too far?) Regardless, maybe that is not such a bad thing in these movies...it's his bread and butter now, is having fun with it and it shows in the movie.

Paul McCartney's cameo was quick but comedic. Orlando Bloom's small part was essential to the story but Keira Knightley's cameo felt tacked on.

I wonder: did Paul's appearance in this film actually help selling tickets?
In other words: how many Beatles fans went to the movie theater just to see him on the big screen for a few seconds?

Only 10 people went to see Give My Regards to Broad St despite mega promotion from Paul in 1984
Plus Paul is the worst actor of the 4 Beatles IMO

First thoughts on the film... meh.

More fun than On Stranger Tides but a lot of the action scenes lacked the realism and fantastic visuals of the first three films. In all honesty, At World's End's visual effects hold up better than Dead Men Tell No Tales even though it was made a decade ago and has a (reportedly) smaller budget than Dead Men.

Johnny Depp seemed bored with the role in terms of his performance. Everyone else was great, though.

There is a post-credits scene, so stay after for that.

Didn't do much for me same old, same old. No Keira Knightley, no sale.
High standard production values I'll give it.

    I'll say this;
Just like how the second one had that scene where they were hanging from a suspended ball-cage reminding me a bit of "Time Bandits",
the opening 'stealing the bank'-bit, reminded me, a bit, of "The Crimson Permenent Assurance"!

    I'll buy the blu-ray if there is a 1-hour documentary about Paul's 30-second cameo :)

The movie opened in Japan yesterday (which also happened to be ¥1,100 movie day).

I liked it. Definitely the best Pirates movie since the first one.

Since it was opening here more than a month after the U.S. opening, I made a point not to read reviews as I was sure the critics would start harping on its production problems.

So, after I got home I went to see what the consensus had been.

Sure enough, the sheep tended to focus on the aforementioned production problems (which is what they did in 2013 with The Lone Ranger – another film that the critics had their pans pre-written for).

One critic even complained the story was too hard to follow...

Anyway, the whole film was a lot of fun – except for the post-credits tag, which suggests that a character I didn't care for might make a return.
