Thanks everybody! Last night I got Elmore James' The Best of the Modern Years and Hound Dog Taylor's Beware of the Dog.

Really liking both.... Taylor's version of "Comin' 'Round the Mountain" is so dirty and gritty I feel like I need to take a shower and scrub under my fingernails.

Someone mentioned Albert King above. His I'm in a Phonebooth Baby LP is a personal fav...

A name I did not see is Mississippi Fred McDowell. His I Do Not Play No Rock N Roll LP is entertaining on many levels.

Another couple of players with differing styles to check out...

Big Joe Williams - One of the early electric players. Recorded often with the original Sonny Boy Williamson and had a big, mean, dirty sound.

Bo Carter - Fantastic country blues player (and singer) from the '30's. Was also a member of the legendary Mississippi Sheiks.

    This.

Incredible music with an incredible story. I can't imagine this sitting in the can, unreleased for 5 years.

    per Wikipedia:

The music on this album was originally recorded in San Francisco in 1971 for Capitol Records, who declined to release it at the time. It was originally released on the independent Bullfrog label after Rush bought the tapes.[2] In 1986 the rights were acquired by Hightone.[3]
Eugene Chadbourne of Allmusic compares Capitol's decision not to release the album to a decision to turn down The Doors on the grounds that Jim Morrison had "no charisma", and says that "[o]ne can imagine the tapes practically smoldering in their cases, the music is so hot".

If you want dirty guitar, you should look to the early 50's guitarists like Willie Johnson (Howlin' Wolf's first guitarist), Pete 'Guitar' Lewis, anybody playing behind Bobby Bland or Junior Parker's Duke sides, Pat Hare, really early B.B. King (early '50's) as well as Hound Dog Taylor and J.B. Hutto, two of the nastiest guitars that I've had the privledge to hear live.

Some of these have already been mentioned, but these examples should fit the bill.
