Our recent Uriah Heep thread and differences in compilation releases had me thinking about starting a poll about the forum members 10 favorite Uriah Heep songs. It is sort of a create our own best of compilation. I can't include everything but I'll do my best to give a cross section of some of their more popular live tracks and singles and see what happens from there.
The Wizard Paradise/The Spell Circle of Hands Rainbow Demon Traveler In Time Easy Livin' July Morning Look at Yourself Sweet Lorraine Tears In My Eyes
The last 3 tracks feature John Lawton on vocals. Those 3 are still played live quite often by the current band.
I didn't include Paradise/The Spell because I didn't want to include too many tracks from the Demons And Wizards lp.
I'll repost these opinions from the other thread. These are some other writer's opinions. Wise Man w/John Lawton Salisbury A Year Or A Day The Easy Road
Didn't like much of Return To Fantasy, but might have cast a spell, err, vote for the title track purely because of the way Byron sings Fantasy. Fahn Tah See. Fahn Tah See. Fahn Ta SeeeeeEeeeeeeEeeeeeEeeee!!!
Bird of Prey Tears in My Eyes Circle of Hands Rainbow Demon Sunrise Blind Eye Echoes in the Dark Stealin’ Circus The Easy Road
Out of this list: Easy Livin' Lady In Black Bird Of Prey Sunrise The Wizard Sweet Lorraine Look At Yourself Gypsy Traveller In Time Circle Of Hands I won't fault your choices but there's LOTS of others I'd choose, such as: Walking In Your Shadow Wake Up (Set Your Sights) High Priestess (a really beautiful, melodic rocker - no one else rocked like that!) I Wanna Be Free (an old particular favorite from long ago) Poet's Justice (one of their very best) Ah geez, I had the night all planned out with other stuff, but now I gotta listen to two or three Heep albums.
Sweet Lorraine Circle of Hands Sunrise Look At Yourself The Wizard Fallen Angel Firefly Choices Midnight If I Had the Time I would've done a straight half and half of Byron and Lawton eras, but David made more records than John did and although from Wonderworld to High 'N Mighty features the lesser valued material, I think "Midnight" from Mighty is one of the last great Byron era numbers. "If I Had the Time", I feel, is a buried nugget from Sweet Freedom, so I had to write-in that one as well. The Lawton songs I wrote in also, represent not only his singing talents well, but the songs are of equal measure. It was a different era for the band and each release with him got more and more commercial minded and slicker. Still, most of Firefly and half of Innocent Victim are good to great moments. I often wonder if they'll ever release the lost 4th album recorded with John? Anyways, @John Fell, thanks for the thread post, even though I listed songs that weren't on the list. Sorry about that...
From the list: Easy Livin' Lady In Black July Morning Look At Yourself Sympathy Magician's Birthday Rainbow Demon Gypsy Sunrise Off the list: The Park Come Away Melinda Salisbury Wise Man
I didn't want to include all the tracks from Demons and Wizards so I left off Paradise/The Spell. In addition, many of the suggestions not on the list were not released as singles or played live very often by the band and so are not live favorites.
The Lawton era tracks I included are still played live by the current edition of the band and are not receiving many votes. I pretty much assumed most people would be more familiar with the Byron era material which looks to be the case with the votes that have been cast. Thanks for voting and commenting.
I almost included I Wanna Be Free but elected to include a few of the better known Lawton era tracks instead.
I almost included Salisbury and Come Away Melinda but decided to include a few Lawton era tracks instead rather than just including all David Byron era tracks.
