A cross-section of 1977 punk singles (using the widest definition). Vote for as many as you like.

I only seem to be able to vote for one. In that case, it has to be the Damned.

Although I did not discover them until they reformed in 1979 and released a string of excellent singles then a great album.

Similarly, I never heard the Pistols single because the BBC refused to play it and I could not find a shop that had it!

In the real-time 1977 my favouritesingle was the Stranglers' - saw them on Top of the Pops and both single and album available at all good record shops on United Artists records and tapes...

I deliberately kept the poll to just one single per act; otherwise I could have done with about 125 choices, instead of the 25 limit! For me 1972 & 1977 were the most exciting years of the '70s; the former most certainly influencing the latter. Punk singles were like shooting stars, lighting up a very stagnant 'scene'.

'God Save The Queen' was banned left, right and centre; although Peel managed a couple of furtive plays. None of the UK chainstores would list it on the charts, let alone sell it. My hometown had just one shop willing to stock it; a large notice in their window announced that although they'd sell GSTQ, under NO circumstance would they play it. Inside, the Pistols singles were kept under the counter, in already sellotaped-up brown bags!! Hard-core, or what!

I voted for everything on the list, except The Boomtown Rats; never could stand Geldof's gobbiness.

Lots of great stuff here, but no Wire? "Mannequin" would definitely be at the top of my '77 punk singles list.

Half of them weren't punk but they still made the list. 2 4 6 8 Motorway by the Tom Robinson band. Seriously?

Nearly all on the list are good, some are brilliant. Except the boomtown rats, who had no qualities I could admire.

    Love The Saints!

    Spiral Scratch (EP)

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    Spiral Scratch
    [IMG]
Spiral Scratch is an EP and the debut release by English punk rock band Buzzcocks. It was released on 29 January 1977, and was the first punk record to be self-released (that is, without the support of an existing record label). It is the third official record ever released by a British punk band (preceded by The Damned's "New Rose", the Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the U.K." and two first singles by The Vibrators in november 1976). The EP is the only Buzzcocks studio release to feature original singer Howard Devoto, who left shortly after its release to form one of the first post-punk bands, Magazine.

When reissued in 1979, it reached number 31 in the UK Singles Chart.[3] In 2017, it entered the top spot of the UK Physical Singles Chart after being re-issued on its' 40th anniversary.[4]

I selected The Damned "Neat, Neat, Neat", however I would add Devo's "Mongoloid/Jocko Homo" to the list. Many will debate whether it's 'punk rock', but I choose to believe it is.
