GROUP 1 - *POLL* Best opening song on an album - R2, G1

    GROUP 3 TOMORROW

"Take me back to dear old Blighty" - it gets my support even though it will not win

"Enter Patty Valentine from the upper hall" - stands a chance. I think

No pick this round, but if any of the four from the next group were here, that’s the one I would go with.

I know, I know—not your fault, Hollow Horse...

Can't stand The Smiths and haven't heard the Talking Heads song.

Happily I like Born In The USA & Hurricane though so they get my votes.

A weak group. Even weaker than group 1. Sad that so many great songs clashed in round 1.

I never would have thought that I would be voting for this Dylan song, but here I go.. listening to it for the first time. And it's quite good!

Update: Damn! It's too long for my liking, but still the best I have to admit.

Aw man, great songs but went with the Smiths & Talking Heads. While I love Bruce, & Dylan is my favorite artist of the ones listed here, I Zimbra & The Queen Is Dead are two of the greatest songs released by two of my favorite bands. Hurricane & Born in the U.S.A are fantastic but not quite on the same level imo

BTW - 'hurricane' is about a boxer

people need to vote on the song, NOT the artist.

I Zimbra and The Queen Is Dead get my votes.

    Voted for:

The Queen is Dead(my first pick by far)
I Zimbra(although not sure how I feel about it as a Great Opening Song to the Album)

Sorry, cannot stand Dylan as his voice is like a Root Canal for my Ears.

Springsteen is another Voice that irritates me, but I do like some of his 'Rock' Songs like 'Tenth Avenue Freezout', but just do not care much for the Music of 'Born in the USA'(although appreciate the Lyrics, which I read that Reagan used the Song having no idea what the Song was about-why are Politicians allowed to used Songs for their Political Benefit, especially written by Music Artists, who probably detest them?).

It's interesting, I do have a dislike for some croaky voices like Rod Stewart, Bonnie Tyler etc - husky? I can do husky but I've never found anything unbearable in Dylan's voice.

In other news, The Queen Is Dead is now sinking like a stone, perhaps there are more Talking Heads fans here?

I admit that I like some Music Artists, who have irritating Voices, like Billy Corgan(Smashing Pumpkins), and love the Music of Joe Jackson, but do not care for his voice, but Dylan's Voice is just on another level of being hard for me to take.

Neil Young(Cat in Heat) is a close 2nd on my most irritating voices list, but I do think a few of his Songs are ok(Rocking in the Free World to name one), but not a fan of the Folk-Rock Music with a Guitar and Harmonica strapped to one's Grill thing though(same when Springsteen and Tom Petty did it, as love only their Rock Songs with their Bands). The only Music Artist I want to hear playing a Harmonica is Stevie Wonder.

I do like Billy Corgan! I really can understand the Neil Young thing, however his immense songwriting overshadows his voice for me, I can't say I dislike it and coincidentally Rocking In The Free World is one of my absolute favourites of his.

I hate the words of the song "Born in the USA". I mean: "go kill the yellow man" is stupid - even soldiers must have known it was not a racist war against yellow people. Springsteen has too much stupid politics in his music and his behaviour. He really should sing about love or shut up.

I will never understand the love that Talking Heads get, but this is a USA forum, so naturally US bands have a big advantage.

And yet I hear it as one of the most tedious songs ever committed to vinyl so I'm dumbfounded that it's made it this far.

That's the joy and frustration of these polls in a nutshell. :)
