For me it's Love Over Gold, a superb album.. Brothers In Arms is an extremely close second.

The debut. As I said in another thread, they never topped it.

    The debut followed by Communique.

I didn't like their music direction afterwards :hide:

They did go very pop based I suppose, especially with BIA.. Sultans of swing is quite pop though, especially compared to the punk invasion at the time.

I enjoy them all but the debut is off the charts good.

I'd be tempted to say they matched the debut with Making Movies if not for "Les Boys."

Making Movies for me. One of the the best opening trios on that album, three of their best songs, imo. Then you have Expresso Love and Solid Rock, which are also quite good. May not be their most innovative love, but Tunnel of Love might be my favorite Dire Straits song. Obviously the album is hampered by Les Boys but whatever, doesn't totally ruin it for me.

You know I never was a huge fan of OES, but the more I listen to the 2lp version that was recently released the more I really like it. My favorite? Not quite, but I would put Planet of the New Orleans, Fade to Black, My Parties, Iron Hand, You and Your Friend and even the title track up against any of their other stuff. That is some righteous music right there!

For me as well. It all came together for them on that one. I used to prefer Making Movies, but the sound had changed by then.

    1. Self titled debut - such a fresh unique sound
    2. Bros in Arms - a close second -- they sounded unique again --- unique as compared to themselves and quite a great result.
3/4. Probably Making Movies over Communique on the strength of Romeo and Juliet but I think I like Communique better otherwise.

  22. My favorite Dire Straits song by a long shot. Knopfler's guitar blows me away every time I listen to this song.
