The majority of radiostations doesn't play that here. It's also music for a younger audience (girls under 16 y.o.) so I didn't add it to the list. The tracks I have added to the list are more appreciated by all ages. 16 y.o. kids love them, but also my parents or older collegues at work. They are both appreciated by the alternative and mainstream public (older and younger). While "Call Me Maybe" starts to annoy the people after a few plays.

"Call me maybe" is on the playlist of 2 commercial stations, but no really my cup of tea. They play the same music every two hours: Snow Patrol, Shakira, Coldplay, Of Monsters and Men, Sam Sparro,... More and more commercial stations are changing their playlists now and start to play less prefab-music and more stuff like Django Django, Of Monsters and Men, Alabama Shakes, Michael Kiwanuka,...

I like some of these "mainstream" tracks but every 2 hours is just too much :) But I don't like majors forcing me to buy something.

Second poll is in the works including some new tracks + 3-4 tracks from 2011 that are still doing well in 2012 (more than 40-50 weeks in the charts!) Not so difficult to figure which ones :)

No doubt that's the single of 2012 and I'm a 48 year old man, not a 16 year old girl. I can't vote for any of the rest of this poll -- I've never heard most of these songs and of the ones I've heard there's only one I even like a little bit.

A lot of the stations in Tim's area (Belgium)'s Top 40 is what is usually played only AAA stations, NPR stations, many college radio stations, etc. here in the US while "Call Me Maybe" is what is the single of the year here in the US and also in Canada on Top 40 radio. Rumour Has It was a huge hit in the US though.

On my Internet Radio, I do sometimes listen to MPR's The Current station and that is a very well programmed AAA station.

A bit strange that 3 of the most popular songs of the year hardly get any votes: Florence + the Machine, Major Lazer and Django Django.

Final bump of the day! Where's the love for Jessie Ware, Major Lazer, Julia Stone (sister of Angus), King Charles,...?

Two big number 1-hits still got no votes???? (Sam Sparro & Emeli Sandé).
Some of the best mainstream/commercial tracks of the year. And they both can actually sing, which is rare for mainstream-artists.

The live performance of Sam Sparro may not be the best. He and the band weren't aware they had to play the remix-version (which is actually number 1 in the charts since few weeks) until a few minutes/hours before the concert. They never had done this version before. But I think it's still a great track, and the album is very interesting (influences from disco-icon Sylvester to Prince). It was recorded with legendary clubs like Paradise Garage and Studio 54 in mind.

16 y.o. girls is already too old for this song.

At 16 they already gave up their barbies / disney pop music and are in love with Ben Howard, Alex Turner, Mark Foster, Sam Sparro, Netsky, etc. ;)

    Bump!

The absolute summerhits of 2012 still have no votes: Sam Sparro, Major Lazer feat. Amber Coffman, Florence + the Machine & Jessie Ware? You gotta be kiddin'

I'm doing my best. Already some names in mind for a third poll.

I never understand the success of the Monkees or Van Halen.

Overall I'm a classic rock fan as well. I think the vibe was different: everything was new, musical revolution, more dedicated craftmanship/virtuosity.

    -----

There's still good electronic music as well, but the "experimental vibe" of the late 70's, 80's and early 90's is gone. Once a genre is no longer fresh and new, it's hard to not get in a downward spiral.

I liked these songs not on either of your polls:

    fun., "We Are Young"

    Nicki Minaj, "Starships"

("We Are Young" is a 2011 song, but became a hit in 2012.)
