Side one or two will probably come out on top but stranger things have happened at sea? Too many awkward moments on sides three & four that drags it down IMO

Side One is the winner for me! The title track, , Fly on a Widshield, In the Cage & Broadway Melody are my favourite songs on the album.
Side two also has some great moments, particularly In the Cage which was ahead of it time. Carpet Crawlers & Lilywhite Lillith also Great songs.

Overall The Lamb is still an album I rate highly & like to spin.

You need to add a poll! :D

I, too, vote for side 1. The whole sequence is just sublime, but especially Lamb -> Fly -> Melody. Unforgettable, unworldly stuff.

Unlike you, though, I rate Side 4 almost as highly. Maybe it's because Side 3 has a little too much slow material, but when the music (and the storyline) picks up again with "Slippermen", it powers through to a highly satisfying, er, climax.

Side three overstays its welcome a little by the end of "Silent Sorrow", IMO. Over the years, I've come to find "Lamia -> Silent Sorrow" to be extremely similar in tone to "Carpet Crawlers -> Chamber" at the end of side 2, and I start to itch for the fast-forward button.

Definitely Side 1. Side 2 is next best.

Side 3 by a small margin over side 1.

1 or 2, can't even remember what's where tbh. All I know is side 3 was very weak...no way should this have been a double, IMO.

Extremely tough choice but I’m gonna go with side 4, which to me is perfect. But I’m really fond of side 3 which flows amazing but a couple songs are weaker than others, however Lamia into Silent Sorrows... is as beautiful as Genesis gets. Side 1 and 2 are freaking amazing as well. One of my favorite albums of all time.

Side 1, but the music is best consumed in its entirety (i.e. similar to the White Album)

Fantastic album! I totally agree with everthing you wrote . I choose the first side but as you said the second side also has great moments.

For me Carpet Crawlers is one of the most magnificent/ Gorgeous Genesis songs, there is so much emotion in the vocals and in the Music, the melodies Filled with magical beauty , the music and the vocals are very touching , the Chorus is very powerful and beautiful at the same time.

The Lamia is also a perfect song, Steve Hackett solo in the end is Marvelous!!!!!

One of my favorite Genesis albums :)
I always listen to the all album.

Side 1, for sure. The title track, Fly on a Windshield and In the Cage are three of my favorite songs from the whole record (along with The Lamia and It), all of which are on Side 1. Side 3 is particularly outstanding as well.

Side 1 of course. I was so pumped when Gabriel and genesis did almost the whole side at the reunion.

Side 1 by a country mile. The playing alone wins it.

Side one is an amazing tour de force. I'll never forget receiving this as a Christmas gift when I was young and just being riveted. After that, the other sides felt more uneven to me and I didn't explore disc 2 as much, but over time, I've come to appreciate the full piece. Yeah, there's some filler in there (I could live without the faux oriental opening to "Colony of Slippermen"), but it's all part of the journey, Rael's phantasmagorical trip. Still, I think that side one is the most powerful and consistent.

a poll on this one would have been nice.

  23. Side 1. In my opinion the album gets slightly worse with each side.

Sorry, I forgot to hit the 'create poll' button & once posted it wouldn't let me edit or create one!
Looking at the answers it would suggest side 1 is tops with 2 a close second as predicted!
There are some songs that I just can't attach a tune to it with ''anyway' being a prime example but mostly all of side 3 would apply. Side 4 does pick up some momentum but by that time you've already heared the strongest material!
