What is your favourite song from Pink Floyd's The Final Cut album, and why?

I included "When the Tigers Broke Free" as an option, which was added to the track list in 2004.

I have a hard time remembering what these songs actually sound like. I'll go with that one where he sings the "f-word" whatever it is.

The Final Cut always seemed like one of the most "complete" songs on the album, and I say that as someone who loves The whole record, so I'm going with that.

"When The Tigers Broke Free" wasn't on the original, obviously. It was added later.

EDIT: just saw the OP's mention of ^ that in the first post.

I went with "Your Possible Pasts", not sure why. It kind of encapsulates the entire tone of the album for me. Also, it's a rewrite / reworking of Waters' unreleased sixties tune, "Incarceration Of A Flower Child", which Marianne Faithful recorded.

“The Gunner’s Dream” is my favorite. It’s one of the most melodically and lyrically haunting songs on the album, as well was one of the most dynamic. I like the whole album, with “Not Now John” being another standout, but “The Gunner’s Dream” is the pinnacle for me.

The Final Cut. It might be a thinly veiled attempt at Comfotably Numb part II but that guitar solo is Godly....

    I chose "Your Possible Pasts".

I can barely define the shape of this moment in time

But hard to pick as the entire album is fantastic, a classic.

I voted for that one too. I agree it kind of sums up the entire album for me in a way (it has always been my favorite track on there), plus I love Dave's solo on it. Wasn't aware of (or had forgotten about) "Incarceration Of A Flower Child", that's interesting.

Final Cut always seems like an even more downbeat addition to the wall. Not Now John is the only thing on the album thats upbeat and you might be able to dance to parts.

I don't know that Waters' version (or the demo of it) has ever surfaced. I have heard a much later live version of Marianne Faithful's however (you can hear in the composition and the chord changes how this song is so Waters, but of a different era--wish Floyd had recorded a version of this):

Suprised that "2 suns in the sunset" didn't get more votes.
Certainly the most mature song (musically) on the album, and one of Waters' best written song ever.

That would maybe be my second choice after the one I chose. Oddly enough, I didn't fully appreciate it until a friend put it on a PF playlist for me and I really liked it out of context of the album.

Not Now John. The most rock n rollish song on the otherwise downbeat album. Thanks DG

Same here. Not Now John just never clicked for me. I actually felt like it didn’t fit with the rest of the album. I’ll give it another listen tonight.

"Not Now John" is excellent. But I selected "The Hero's Return", because I love that piece. I prefer the longer single version, but the album gets it's point across. There are other greats, like "Your Possible Past", but this is truly an 'album' in the sense that the songs work best together...
