To celebrate the upcoming "Super Sgt Pepper" box (if it ends up being like the 1967 album, it may be the box to end all other boxes), I thought I'd do a poll to gauge how many actually own a super deluxe box by an artist, or multiple artists.

From past comments I see, I gather that many are not a fan of such boxes, either due to their cost or because they simply feel the elaborate packaging and inserts are not really worth the expense (or shelf space). On the other hand, I also have seen many comments from those who own several and enjoy them.

    My total amounts to...drumroll...12.

Here they are, in approximate order of those I'd most happily recommend:

    Elvis Presley: That's The Way It Is - Deluxe Edition (8 CD's, 2 DVD's) 1970
Magical Mystery Tour: The Beatles (Deluxe Box) 1967
Led Zeppelin (1969): Super Deluxe (Includes replica press kit for debut album)
Houses Of The Holy: Led Zeppelin (1973) A beautiful vivid orange box with great content
Sticky Fingers: The Rolling Stones (1971) Beautiful 2 LP box with other great material
    Led Zeppelin II (1969)
    Led Zeppelin IV (1971)
In Through The Out Door: Led Zeppelin (1979)
    Led Zeppelin III (1970)
Some Girls: The Rolling Stones (1978)
The Song Remains The Same: Led Zeppelin (1976) Gorgeous and sleek 5 LP Box
    Presence: Led Zeppelin (1976)

Some super deluxe boxes that I inexplicably have yet to plunk down the money for include Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti and Coda. I would also like to add the Stones Exile On Main St box, but I own so many copies already on vinyl and CD that I just never put it at the top of my priority list.

Springsteen's "The River" also looks like a tempting one and I've heard good things about it. Seeing that it's only my 5th favorite Bruce album though I haven't been overly excited to buy it. Now a super box for "The Wild, The Innocent"... :)

A great box but I was thinking more of "super deluxe boxes" (as they are named) in regards to celebrating specific albums/films.

    Do "unofficial product" boxes count?

I voted six. And then I realized, I forgot about The Beatles.

You're not allowed to do that here.

Nada. There aren't many of these sets that interest me, while the ones that do intrigue me happen to be too expensive.

I can understand that. They definitely are a "not for everybody" kind of product.

I assume you're just talking about single-album boxes, right? And including or not including 2 CD "deluxe editions"?

If not including the more common 2 CD deluxe editions, I think I just have three:

[IMG] (Coltrane: A Love Supreme, Complete Masters 3CD)

[IMG] (Coltrane: Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings)

    and

[IMG] (Verve: A Northern Soul 3CD)

Does this fatboy 4CD set count?

    [IMG] (Coltrane: Live in Japan)

If 2CD "Deluxe Editions" and "Collector's Editions" of single albums are thrown in I have a lot more. 4x Marvin Gaye, 3x Coltrane in addition to those listed above, 3x Velvet Underground, 2x Beach Boys (I think), one each by Otis Redding, Dennis Wilson, Stooges, Flaming Lips, Miles Davis, Kendrick Lamar, Charlie Parker, and probably others.

Those look like some wonderful sets!

Yes, I was thinking of boxes that are devoted to one album/film, are typically lp size in dimension, and almost always include a book and bonus discs, dvd's, etc.

I've never been one for those "super deluxe" boxes because they tend to present the same songs over and over in minutely different variations. I had my hands on the five-disc version of VU's Loaded, but I couldn't justify it.

I only have a few of what I'd truly call Super Deluxe boxes, (not counting things like The Beatles mono CD box) mostly by The Stones.

But I do have the super Peppers box on order.

Aside from the great music and often wonderful bonus content, I like super deluxe sets because of the class they add to a music collection. I kinda view the hard boxes like great hardcover novels. I can neatly file them on a library shelf and at any moment one can pull out a box and immerse themselves in a select classic.

I tend to like music more than books, but these super sets are a case where the two kind of merge as one. :)

This looked so cool to me because I had quite a few of E's early 60's singles with picture sleeves, that I don't have any more for one reason or another.

I have plenty of box sets but no super deluxe of a certain album.
Once past the commercial release and a few demos or outtakes, I'm never gonna need that much rough draft from one album.
Plus it takes away some of the mystery of the albums.

I can see what you mean, although it probably depends a lot on how far one likes to immerse themselves when it comes to an album. I tend to be the type that when I get obsessed with an album, the more the better. It actually enhances or expands my appreciation of an album rather than detract from it. Most the bonus content on the super sets I own actually have very little repitition in terms of multiple takes of a song. And most the sets (The Elvis box, in particular, has shows/material unique to just the deluxe box).

The Zeppelin boxes are also very well-done (in my humble but minority opinion relative to many comments I've seen), in that the bonus disc nicely follows the original album but simply makes for an "alternate version of the album". In fact, the only criticism I might offer is that Page might have been too sparse in keeping the mystery of the original albums alive and not always providing an alternate mix of every song. "Physical Graffitti" is a prime example, although what was provided is still great.

In fact, only 15 of them are housed in "real" boxes.

Do the Beatles 2009 Mono and Stereo boxes count as "super deluxe"? What about the Jethro Tull sets with 2 CDs and 2 DVDs?
