Out Of Africa. Plus, you get an amazing Klaus Maria Brandauer as her exploitive husband.

SOPHIE'S CHOICE, as a Polish immigrant bearing the terrible weight of history.

On a completely different level, the comedy, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, as a corporate queen who rules a fashion magazine.

Question of taste, I guess... I liked it last time watching.

Just talking personal preference here, but I appreciated her playing the romantic lead in Defending Your Life contrasted with the dramatic lead in Doubt. She handled both admirably, and that speaks to her versatility.

That begs the question: have you seen any other movies of hers?

Curious if those who don’t think she’s a good actor can name someone who they feel would have given a better performance in Sophie’s Choice.
    I can’t even imagine it.

Yeah, I'm not sure that film ever gets made without Streep. The only alternative I can see would be to cast a Polish actress who is also able to speak English very well. But, if I remember the film correctly, doesn't she also need to speak some German? I've probably seen it 3 times, but it's been a while. It would certainly be the one film I'd recommend to someone who wants to know why Streep is considered to be great.

Surprising any one would she's not good . I think she is unquestionably great , and at so many things, accents, mannerisms, personifying her characters . She has shown great range in her career, but many of her films don't necessarily appeal enough to me to make me want to watch.

I can't fathom how anyone could think Streep is anything but excellent.

"Choice" remains her definitive performance. That's arguably the most emotionally devastating movie I've ever seen, and much of that comes from Streep's work.

"Prada" is impressive because it's a crap movie overall. While a "Choice" sans Streep wouldn't have been as good, it still had strong enough bones to succeed, whereas a "Prada" without Streep would've been pretty much unwatchable.

I like Hathaway, and Emily Blunt/Stanley Tucci have their moments, but Streep carries that movie. I think she deserved an Oscar for that more than "Iron Lady"!

Go visit the "2019 box office" thread and you'll find an SHFite who thinks Streep is a talentless hack! :help:

Honestly, I thought this thread had been bumped by him!

I have seen many performances of Meryl's and any of the ones mentioned above are fantastic. My favourite performance is in The Bridges of Madison County. It is considered to be a great feat of acting and for me it is one moment. She is on her porch talking with Clint Eastwood. She walks away to go back in the house and we see her brush at the back of her skirt in a way to express only that she is interested in how she looks to him as she walks away. Other actresses could probably do that same gesture but no one could have described the complex female responses in attraction. Brilliant.

No need to go visit that thread. I'm more than happy to visit this thread and comment how much I can't stand Meryl Streep movies.

Taste is a personal opinion. I've never been in a group of people and never had any one of them suggest that we go see a Meryl Streep movie either.
