I think it's more that they were created in the image of The Beatles than the music itself. I think the Monkee's music was derived from Beatles music, but it's at least as connected to the American country/western/rock/rockabilly sources as to The Beatles directly. In other words, a lot of Monkees music sounds to me more like "Act Naturally", "Matchbox", "I'm a Loser", "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby" and the like than to The Beatles's more synthesized style.

Only Monkees I own are two copies of one of their albums that has the Mary, Mary drum break.

I highly recommend, when possible, getting the Present box, too. If you are going all in, the Present box outtakes are better than the leftovers from Instant Replay box, and they span a larger chunk of their recording timeline . Find a way to get a copy of the BB&M box and you are pretty much covered. Changes when you feel the need to complete the set. And, whenever you decide to purchase anything else Monkees, get Andrew Sandoval's book Day by Day..., it's a must for Monkee audio collectors.

Instant Replay is better than BB&M, IMO, and is a must have (and I would say it's better than Head, but that opens up a whole new can of worms). I'd say Pisces is the best album in their catalogue, but get IR after that. Then go back and get BB&M and Head. If you want a look into the vault, get the Missing Links series (because their outtakes are usually as good as their released material).

It's a shame that "No music by The Monkees at all" is the most popular option.

I would not have dreamed of revisiting the Monkees in this day and age if it were not for the abundant threads on this forum. Now that my interest has re-perked I have
http://www.*******.com/uploads/posts/2012-06/1338618073_the-monkees-front.jpg and a greatest hits cd. And...its all good.

This is the coolest thing I've read on this forum in a while. I've been inspired to listen to other artists people praise, too. It's been great experiencing, or re-visiting, this music.

I would say no. Their support team seemed to keep them fresh, hip and innovative. The series was in color, too. I will say that I prefer the first 5 albums in mono (but that may be because I experienced the stereo first and burned out on those mixes). You can almost build their entire original catalogue in mono, with the Deluxe sets, if you desire. You'd only have to fold down a handful of tracks.

    I'm a Believer on 7" single.
The Monkees' silly tv show and their music was for kids in the 1960s. I have no use for their music as an adult.

I have a CD that contains two Nesmith solo albums. I get a kick out of "The Great Ennui". Good tune.
