We put "Already Gone" on the shelf.

    Five remain, one must go.

Discussion question: Imagine it would have been possible for every artist here to have covered the other seven tracks. If such happened, which do you think would have been good? Which would have been train wrecks?

    6 Already Gone
    T7 Faith
T7 Have You Seen The Stars Tonite?

DQ: I think Leon Russell and the Allman's could cover each other's songs

I think anybody else here doing From The Beginning (other than possibly Bowie) would be a disaster.

DQ: I'd love to hear Prince taking on David Bowie. And vice versa.

    "Song for You" again

DQ: Agree with Brian Kelly about Russell and the Allmans, and Eagles would have been good on "Melissa" as well.

    DQ...

I think having Bowie and Prince swap out would be a winner either way.

Then from my demented dark side...

Have this TWL's bottom-feeders, Kantner and Michael, swap out. Not so much a train wreck as a Roswell crash.

"Faith" a la Bowie would have been interesting. Leon in his prime covering "Already Gone".

    Leon Russell = out

I could see Bowie or Prince doing their own versions of all these songs and they aren't catastrophic.

    I voted ELP...
But how is "When Doves Cry" losing this so far--?

I think Prince covering Bowie or Bowie covering Prince would've been interesting - but probably not with the songs in question. I just have a hard time imagining Prince with the icy Teutonic grandeur of "Station to Station" or Bowie with the yelping expressiveness of "Doves"...

    General anti-80s sentiment?

I'm voting off ELP until they're not there to vote off no more! :)

Such ingratitude! How could you vote against Leon Russell when he wrote the darn Song for You? :)

I think Prince could have done something with the "side effects of the cocaine" part of the song, if not the train beginning. And if you imagine a Let's Dance-era Bowie (slight anachronism, I know) crooning through "When Doves Cry", it would require a drastic rearrangement, but it could totally work.

Prince did cover "'Heroes'" on the Piano and a Microphone dates. I've yet to hear a good-quality recording of it, though.

    Song For You

DQ: Prince could have done some interesting covers for those songs, for sure.

Voting for "From The Beginning". Interesting how my tie-breaking vote with smallest possibly margin kept "A Song for You" in the game, and now it looks like it will survive another round without problem.

I don't think the Prince and Bowie songs would work when done by anyone else, they are so idosyncratic and personal, and the production and arrangement are important to the songs. "A Song for You" on the other hand is a song that I think all the others could have done something meaningful out of, it's strenght lies in the basic composition.
