We closed the book on "Paperback Writer."

    Three remain, one must go.

Discussion question: Where do you rate this in the catalog of American releases? In the overall canon?

    4 Paperback Writer
    5 Don't Let Me Down
    6 Lady Madonna
T7 The Ballad Of John And Yoko
    T7 Can't Buy Me Love
T9 I Should Have Known Better
    T9 Old Brown Sho

This is my second favorite Beatles album, right behind MMT. I guess I like those US configurations. :)

    Rain.
I don't rate it at all as part of the canon. It's just a collection.

I rank it above Early, Introducing, Please Please Me, Beatles For Sale, VI, Story, and the half-instrumental Soundtrack releases.
I put it about even with Pepper, '65 and Let It Be.
I prefer the other US and UK releases.

    Jude to go.

don't have any of the US releases - it looks like a good enough collection of tunes. Not earth shattering.

I was curious about how these HEY JUDE songs fared when we did PAST MASTERS 2 about eight years ago, and found our final four was the same. "Rain" beat "Paperback Writer" in the final. So, we are going to have at least one different finalist this time.

    Rain gets the boot.
I used to play this LP a LOT before the digital versions came out.
It was the best way to hear a lot of the latter period stuff without constantly changing the record. Having a few of the earlier things on there was also nice to kind of cleanse the palate!

But now, I can't recall the last time I did play it. I'm looking to get a CD version if I can find a Walmart that has it in the $5 bin, as has been posted about here on SHF. I'm sure I'll play that one at least a few times before it goes on the shelf.

No "Rain" for me. Hey Jude has always been one of my favorite albums. It introduced me to "Paperback Writer," "Rain" and "Old Brown Shoe" and collected most of the terrific latter day singles I heard on the radio. It was Past Masters before we actually got Past Masters (with a much better cover! They really should have used some of the photos from the session for the Past Masters artwork in 2009 at least.).

Revolution is a great song, but an easy choice for this round.

Where do I rank this in the overall canon? I don't. I consider it a compilation (though some of the other US albums are to an extent, but not completely). It would be like asking whether one likes the "red" or "blue" albums more than the White album.

Right--none other had only songs that had already been out on 45, so in that since, it is truly a compilation.

The pedant in me won't let me answer the DQ. I could rank the album within the catalog, but I can't rate it in that fashion. :)

    Hey Jude.

    Finally.

    Maybe.

DQ: though I grew up with 'em, the US LPs are non-entities around here.

Get the Jude out of here... That's a worthy final left without it.

  21. Can't choose, but looking at the numbers, it appears that I don't need to either...

I love Rain, the song, but it gets my vote.

Hey Jude and Revolution are absolute classics and IMHO are getting votes only because of being overplayed.

I do love this album but since I don't listen to vinyl anymore, and I don't have it on CD, I don't listen to it any more. It would have been in my top 25% of the US albums though. It's a great collection.

    "Hey Jude" 'til it's gone.

This is easily the bottom of the barrel in the American release catalog. The songs are all good, but there's nothing to hold them together.

You can't take Hey Jude off of Hey Jude! Yet.
    I voted Rain.
Revolution backed with Hey Jude would make a great single.

One of the best Beatles releases. Doesn't matter to me of it was a collection of singles. I didn't have the singles. It's a great album.
    Top Five for sure.
