I voted for Miller's Crossing, but I've got a big weakness for Lebowski ... may be my favorite comedy of all time.

Lebowski is great--there's no question but at the risk of sounding too mainstream...I gotta say that "Fargo" continues to amaze me.

Same here. "Raising Arizona" is a close second, but Lebowski is simply one of the greatest comedies ever. :)

John Goodman should've gotten a best supporting actor nomination for Lebowski. That was a classic character he played.

Have to say Fargo, with Lebowski a close second. John Goodman is amazing.

"Miller's Crossing" is my favorite film of the 90s. That film works on so many levels it's ridiculous, and really rewards multiple viewings.

I have not seen "Intolerable Cruelty" yet.

Agree. His performance is so deep and layered you almost miss it, if that makes sense. He makes it look effortless.
He can also easily perform over the top, near slapstick comedy like in "Raising Arizona". He's one of the greatest comic actor and it's a damn shame that he hasn't had many good parts of late.

I agree 100 percent. absolutely incredible performances from Turturro, Feeney, Jon Polito and especially Gabriel Byrne. the story has so many plot twists my jaw practically stayed on the floor the first time I saw it. great flick.

I laughed my butt off during Intolerable Cruelty, but it's a little slick for Coen films. very enjoyable, but not in the same league as their other comedies, imo.

it's great to see so many votes for Lebowski. what a great bunch of urban achievers we have here (and proud we are of all of you). I find it a natural, zesty enterprise.

what in God's holy name am I blathering about?

    watch the movie, dude.

It's not just the plot either, the characters have depths that reveal themselves not just as the movie progresses, but also as you watch and re-watch.

Spoilerish example - read only if you have seen the film:

On the surface, it hits you that Eddie Dane is gay. His relationship with Mink echoes the traditional "gunsel" character from noir fiction. As it develops and the more you think about it, it becomes apparent that The Dane is not so much gay, as the bearer of a pathological hatred of women, which he channels into his rage and propensity for violence. This all comes across through J.E. Freeman's performance and really only one line of dialog that tips it off ("I'll track down all of you whores"). With an absolute minimum of brush strokes, they have painted a secondary character of depth and complexity. Cool stuff if that's what you look for in a movie.

On the other hand, Lebowski slips in a reference to my wife's home town of Port Huron, Michigan, so that's pretty cool, too. :)

that's a cool insight, Ken. The Dane is definitely one of the all-time great movie villains. and you're right -- even when he's not onscreen, he haunts the story. good analysis.

I can't believe Hudsucker Proxy has only gotten one vote so far. I love it because it's one screen credit away from being a Terry Gilliam movie. The visuals rival Brazil. Love it.

Still... had to go with Lebowski.

What's a Hudsucker anyway? For that matter, what's a Lebowski?
