I know Ireland[is Eire still ok to say?] isn't part of Britain but i think lots of people outside of Britain and the Commonwealth think it is, and i see no harm in that. Irish guitarists should be included imo.

Shocked there is no Robin Trower, Hank Marvin or Gary Moore. Tell you who i really like but i wouldn't of voted for him if he'd of been on the list and that's ex-Lizzy guitarist Eric Bell. Love his sound and his soloing. Have no idea if he's from Northern Ireland or Ireland?

I voted for Jeff Beck, with Brian May a close second. Out of the 'oldies' Beck progresses with his music. My all-time favourite guitar solo is Jeff playing on Roger Waters' track, What God Wants, part 3.

The poll would be better if it was more specific.

There is harm in it as it is factually incorrect.

I'm glad you framed this as "favorite" rather than "best", and I hope people take it that way.

I like all the players on this list and love most of them. A third or more of them are a huge influence on me as a listener and player. Picking just one of them is pretty arbitrary.

For today's exercise I chose David Gilmour. I could just listen to him all day. He could play the phone book and it would sound beautiful and musical.

The votes so far are going as I would expect for Page, Beck and Clapton but my choice is Rory Gallagher.

Page is an overrated electric guitarist IMO. He's a brilliant acoustic player, and his riffs are excellent, but his actual soloing (particularly live, but occasionally in the studio as well) is often sloppy and clunky.

I wish Stuart Adamson (Big Country) and Brian Robertson (Thin Lizzy, Motorhead) were on this list but they are admittedly less high profile.

Limiting myself to electric guitar music playing AND composing, today these are my faves:

    Tonny Iommi
    Steve Hackett
    Steve Hillage
    Robert Fripp
    David Gilmour
    Mark Knopfler
    Ritchie Blackmore
    Pete Townshend

Now, If I had to pick the more skilled or more proficient guitar player I'd rather abstain myself from voting, 'cause in my viewpoint this is a matter for who works with music or carry on musician activities.

Another point of notice is the surprisingly damn great amount of Zeppelin fans on SH music forum, as well as so few Beatles fans voting for Harrison... But then I'm not a Beatles fan but even so I really can't relate his guitar playing to one of the most relevant sounds of their music.

EDIT: oh I voted for Iommi , the Riff Master

They're not just saying it, he is Irish - why not Angus Young then, he's more British than Rory Gallagher!

My favorite is Eric Clapton. At one point, I was really into british blues.. EC, Pagey, Beck, Peter Green, Mick Taylor etc etc. I love those guys.. Great music. I bought a Les Paul because of them. But since we can only pick one guitarist, I'd go with Eric. He's my favorite guitar player of all time. Really love his playing. The Beano Album, Cream, Blind Faith, Dominos. He's simply one of the best. It's a pity his pop songs made people forget how great he was in the late 1960s through early 1970s. You can say whatever you want, "Clapton is boring", "Clapton's solos are too repetitive" or whatever. To me, he will always will be my hero.

Wow just realized I don’t really care much for any British lead guitarist.
I went with David Gilmour. For a ‘clean’ sounding guitarist he does some really cool stuff. I love about a dozen American guitarists more than any of these Brits. I think it has to do with the tones Americans use, more distortion, and the Americans are just closer to the roots music that informs rock n roll.

  24. Was gonna vote for Richard Thompson (so he could be the bronze medalist, over Eric Clapton, to Page & Beck), but...
George Harrison had way too few votes, so I voted for him!!
