I voted for David Gilmour, but I could have easily chosen Steve Hackett, Robert Fripp, Steve Howe, Brian May, Andy Summers, or Steve Rothery (who isn’t on the list and should be, IMHO).

It seems like Richard Thompson is popular in this forum. Wow. Thank you guys, now I need to listen to Fairport Convention.

 

Nobody can make a guitar sing like David Gilmour. Almost every deeper album track on every one of his solo albums does nothing but get better and better with age, and it's largely the overall quality of thought that goes into his guitar-playing.

If there was ever an electric guitar player that I wish would work occasionally in symphonic contexts, doing something akin to mini concertos for guitar and orchestra -- it'd be David Gilmour.

And I wish, wish, wish he'd dig into his surely vast vault of demos, and start releasing all instrumental albums -- soundscapes, if you will -- not unlike The Endless River. I'd buy every one of them.

 

Steve Howe barely over Robert Fripp ... though Fripp is keeping it going better these days

 

Lots of brilliant artists here, but in my book Steve Howe has the perfect combination of chops and taste.

 

Dave Gregory should be in this list. Anthony Phillips, too.

 

And that's pretty much one of the main reasons why I I don't care much for most American guitarists so far seen mentioned on the SH music forums,

Why Frank Zappa is not on the list? I'm not that fan of his works, but I'm sure he deserves mention here, there are some pieces and songs by him that I really love thanks to his outstanding eclecticism.

 

nope, he is a lazy old man who likes talk the talk and not walk the walk.

i have no use for him, nor his greed.

 

One possible factor of him not being in a poll of British Guitarists is that he's American.

Went with Beck just because there's nobody else like him. Glad to see he's getting some love. Page is too hit and miss for me. I have guitarist friends who think he's sloppy.

Mick Taylor and Mick Ronson (shocked he has 0 votes at this point) would be right up there too. I really need to dig into Peter Green as I'm not really all that familiar with his work.

 

Danny Kirwan. The more I listen to his playing, the more I love it.
