Diana Ross and The Supremes will always be my favourite, but I did love The Pointer Sisters (especially Ruth, shame no solo album). Odyssey were another favourite of mine, but probably no one stateside has heard of them. They had a lot if UK hits.

You mean the "Native New Yorker" group? That's all I know by them, but I love it.

Echoing the sentiments of the folks who voted "other" with Stax bands. Sam & Dave and Booker T & the MGs are tied for my two favorites.

That's right. They made 5 really great albums, especially Hang Together, which includes Use It Up And Wear It Out, a UK #1.

  8. Brian Kelly

Brian Kelly 1964-73 rock's best decade

Since it says "favorites" I went with:
    Supremes
    Temptations
    Jackson 5
If it said "best" I would have voted for:
    Sly & Family Stone
    Impressions
3rd choice would be tough one between my 3 favorites and Smokey/Miracles

  9. Can't narrow it down to three....from this list...
    Sly & The Family Stone
    Smokey Robinson & The Miracles
    The Impressions
    Parliment Funkadelic
    & "Other"...

    Other meaning...
    The Meters
    The Staples Singers
    The Soul Stirrers
    The Ronettes

    Honorable Metions:
    The Four Tops
    The Isley Brothers
    The Temptations
    Diana Ross & The Supremes
    The Drifters
    The Coasters
    The Shirelles

  11. It wasn't easy and if you ask me in 6 months it could be different. I picked the ones I did only because I have the most albums by them.

    Earth, Wind & Fire
    Sly & The Family Stone
    The Temptations.

The Isleys and The Commodores are unjustly missing.

Not so easy as it's hard to whittle a list like this right down to 3... 10 would have been more comfortable, but there you go.

The Four Tops: Some of the very best Motown singles were released by them IMO. For mono (essential) I have The Ultimate (CD); and wow!

The Temptations: From My Girl to Ball Of Confusion (& beyond) again, almost untoppable for 45s - the album Psychedelic Shack is awesome.

Sly And The Family Stone: Getting into these right now (after starting with comps) as mentioned in at least a couple of other threads. One hand I wished I'd taken the time to listen to them a long time ago. 'Underdog' has been on repeat, in my head for a fortnight!!

    I must also mention - The Drifters/EWF/Smokey & The Miracles/Jackson 5/Kool And The Gang/Diana Ross, The Supremes/The Platters.

If I could, I'd have Otis Redding and with Booker T and The MG's that would qualify and top the whole lot here. :)

I suppose the 'Chic Band' (Nile Rogers, Bernard Edwards mainly) would be just a bit too much of a stretch (as in, it's disco...)?

This has come down to a contest between The Temptations at 37 and Sly at 33. The next closest competitor is The Supremes at 21.

Sort of disappointed at hew few votes The Platters received. They're my top pick, with The Tempts coming second. Third's a tie between The Drifters and The Four Tops. Went with the former because you practically get two radically different groups in one.
