I thought he was asking which band is a mother or father to some other band.

You might be right. She met him in The Poconos once. I have to look and see if some the pictures still exist.

He loves Sinatra's "lonely at the bar" albums:

He's not big on rock n' roll, but he loves piano driven music, so this is his favorite "upbeat" music:

She's not really into music, but she had a couple of Elvis 45's as a teen

Hey Vinyl Man Another bloody Yank down under...

Both my parents loved all the '60s folk revival acts (except Dylan, interestingly - or maybe they just couldn't stand his voice?), and the giants who influenced them (Harry Belafonte, the Weavers, etc.). I don't recall them expressing fondness for any rock acts, although Mom has mentioned seeing The Animals in concert when she was in college. She said they were so drunk they could barely hold their instruments, never mind play them.

Though my parents were born in the 30's, they were reasonably hip to newer music as I was growing up in the 70's and 80's. We all loved the Beatles. Dad leaned more towards the Who and Led Zeppelin. Mom embraced some of the artier stuff that we liked, such as David Bowie, Brian Eno and Roxy Music. She even liked the Velvet Underground (the mellow s/t album--we never played White Light/White Heat for her!). I always gave her a lot of credit for taking an interest in what we were into.

I feel like every third post I write on here is about my dad, who is responsible for introducing me to popular music at the tender age of zero and giving me black sabbath-induced nightmares at four. when I was little, I used to lie on the church pew in his studio while he worked and together we'd listen to zeppelin and plastic Ono band. he's also heavy into the blues and loves Sonny Terry and Buddy Guy and Muddy. plus Hendrix, Shawn Phillips, beatles, king crimson, David Crosby, the who, etc... he claims to have attended over a thousand shows, and took photos at nearly all of them. he kept hundreds of ticket stubs from the 70s, mindblowingly oddball groupings like glass harp opening for yes with Peter Green's fleetwood mac featuring special guest Neil Young. (admission: $2.)

my mom isn't as ardent a music listener, though she really likes classic motown and got me hooked on the supremes in middle school. she's also told me that 'the rain song' is her favorite song of all time, so I always think of her when it comes round on houses of the holy.

My parents' first date the old man took mom to see Sinatra.. Talk about smooth.

Growing up it was always Old Blue Eyes and the Four Tops from dad; mom loved the Supremes and anything on Broadway at the time.

One of the coolest things about collecting vinyl is when they come over and I put on these records they haven't heard in 40 years.. And they still know every song. Too good
