john lennonist There ONCE was a NOTE, PURE and EASY...

Can't think of one of their songs specifically, but Larry Graham (Sly Stone's bass player) and his band Graham Central Station (which he put together after Sly's sad flameout) had a lot of great stuff and is vastly underrated (or unknown).

But my All Time Favorite Funk song (though largely unknown due to its release before the band hit it big) is from the Tower of Power's debut album:

(with Chaka on vocals as well)

Admittedly, both are on the slicker side of the funk, but I love that style.

The Beatles do not belong in this thread.

    Mandrill certainly do.

  6. One of the less intense tracks from the great great Lee Moses, but with a chooglin percolating bass and answering horns:

This may have been the second funk single I ever bought, after James Brown's "Super Bad" in November 1970. It's "I'm Just Like You" by 6IX on Sly Stone's Stone Flower label (A-side is "Dynamite"). Also bought "Somebody's Watchin' You" by Little Sister at the same time, it became a big hit. This came out in December 1970:
