I got it for free from the elementary school of my kids. I have sanded and varnished the cabinet. I have provided the boards with extra support. I think it can contain about a 1000 records.
Great find! The house we moved into last summer has 2 Skovby media cabinets mounted to the wall that my system sits on top of--they look remarkably similar to your cabinet except shorter. They'd be perfect to fill with records, but as it is, I only keep my current top played albums in them bacause I'm afraid the weight of a full record load would pull them out of their mounts. Someday I'll get legs for them and fill 'em up.
I'm not familiair with Skovby, but I think this cabinet is at least 40 years old. And it's dutch made. Skovby is swedish?
Understood! You’re quite right: my turntable could plug directly into the speakers. However, it is quadraphonic and the quad amplifier is required to assign each channel to the correct speaker. The output is then attenuated back to line level and fed directly to the four speakers, so the amp effectively acts as a pre-amplifier. With CD4 albums, the turntable processes the channels but the amp is required to split them into four outputs, whilst for SQ albums the amp does all the processing.
The other panel catching "the opposite speakers reflection" should not be an issue and may be over damping the room. Early first reflections are what creates distortion. Later reflection, those reaching the ears after the early reflections are what create a spatious sound and help define the space the recording was made in and helps with the sound stage. At least this is my understanding from my readings and personnel experience. However what is most important is what your ears enjoy, so keep them in place if you already have explore this and like them where they are.
I just fell down the rabbit hole and loving it! Had a friend that needed to downsize cuz he was moving to a smaller place and offered me his McIntosh 2505 amp at a price I couldn't pass on. He was the original owner so I know it has been well taken care of. Then the hunt was on to find a preamp from the same time . Found a C28 at a shop in Fla that is also a McIntosh dealer so they went through it before they shipped it. I must say I have always wanted some Mc gear and this system sounds sweet. C28 pre, 2505 amp, Rega RP3 with Exact 2 and Klipsch Quartet. The new look....... I like it!
I don't know maybe folks didn't like the way they looked in the new all black instead of brushed aluminum world. I have a Fisher 500 B that has a wood case friends love the look too. I have another case on the way for the 2505 amp to finish the vintage look.
