The Smiths - Pretty Girls Make Graves. From 3:00 until the end.

As soon as I heard that part I knew The Smiths would be a very special band to me.

"Don't Back Down" (mono version) - The Beach Boys. The stereo version falls prey to the infamous Chuck Britz early fade.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Sir Psycho Sexy. Love John Frusciante's guitar work on the outro of this track.

The crazy outro to "Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me and My Monkey" is in my top 10.

I just remembered another one that's pretty awesome, Back Door by Clan of Xymox. I'm not quite sure whether the outro begins at 3:23 or when the guitar (which may be faux, as it's a synth pop band) kicks in at 3:46, but it's all good:

And another good one is Hide in Your Shell by Supertramp. Beginning right where the sax comes in after the last line of vocals. If you know the band you should know where I mean. Perfect!

I'd post a Youtube studio version but most examples lately have been live, and bands don't always copy note-for-note.

  12. And I doubt you'll find a YouTube video of a Hodgson-era Supertramp studio recording. Maybe not impossible, but extremely unlikely. Roger Hodgson is one of the fiercest persecutors of copyright violators.

I'll provide direct links to all of these so you don't have to skip to the outro.

#3 - Carly Simon "Haven't Got Time For The Pain"

I don't know what it was about the early '70s, but there were a slew of songs released with wicked, dramatic outros. I've always thought this was one of the best.

I will add Springsteen's Racing In The Street. That coda is the second best melody he's written. Trails only Summer On Signal Hill.

Some of the ones posted already like "Goodbye Stranger", "The Chain", "Youre No Good" are great. I would include those as well as these:

    Derek & The Dominos-Layla
    Elton John-Grey Seal
    Eagles-Hotel California
    ELO-Shangri-La
    The Monkees-Pleasant Valley Sunday
    Paul McCartney-1985
    Beatles-While My Guitar Gently Weeps
    Steely Dan-FM

Love the last couple minutes of Black Sabbath's Iron Man.

The last minute of "Brown Sugar" - the "yeah yeah yeah wooo!" vocals, the guitar, Bobby Keys' sax - it's the Stones at their most joyful and abandoned peak, right down to the faintly heard "Yah!" at the very end. It's the perfect encapsulation of the power of the Rolling Stones, and of rock 'n' roll itself.

The J.Geils Band's "Wreckage" ain't bad either - starts around the 3:35 mark..
