I'd like to get Mackie XR624 (or whatever in that price range and under) and I know nothing. Just have a laptop for playing files. So what all do I need? Wires and all. I assume a preamp/dac but I am not sure about necessary outputs and so on. Is a passive volume sufficient? And I don't know about the output input from the laptop for that.

I have Kanto yu6 for my master bedroom set up. Has optical, coax digital, rca, mini, bluetooth and sub out . Slightly smaller and less powerful than Mackie. Comes with most cables you would need. Sounds very good. Don't feel the need for a sub in this application. Has internal DAC.

So with the kanto you just connect the laptop directly? That sounds easy peasy.

Those Kantos also have a remote IIRC, which is pretty handy for monitors that tend to put volume controls on the rear.
