Almost all CD releases of Classical/Contemporary music by "BIS Records", a record label from Sweden. They've released lots of Scandinavian/Northern contemporary music, and they're also famous for their excellent Schnittke Edition.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BIS_Records
I've got about 10 CD's in my collection, all of which have pre-emphasis.

I am firmly of the opinion that the labels do absolutely nothing to the original master for all these "Original Classics" 5 CD sets.
I have found that for some this is a good thing (original mastering). However, things such this case of pre-emphasis are not so good.
Maybe if they decided to "fix" the pre-empahsis they wouldn't stop there: apply no-noise, crank up the levels, adjust the EQ ... ...

Thank you. I have ripped the CD and didn't catch the pre-emphasis. Will rip it again and apply de-emphasis.

Actually, none of the Creative Sounds CDs that I've come across have the same mastering as any '86 Castle CD. (And I have the 60xx and 60xx-2 discs for all of the releases that CS did.) All different. But yes, in a few cases, they sound really similar. I personally think that's just because they weren't messed with much from the original masters, by Creative Sounds or Castle. Now for the very first one, I agree that it sounds better de-emphasized, but if you look at the spectrum as-is, and then de-emphasized, and also compare with a few of the early lps, it is just a bright recording. Not mistakenly missing the PE flag.

Ok, you may very well be right. But especially the self titled CS (I have the 6006-2) doesn't only sound bright but very much "unnaturally" so. It's quite clearly processed. I only have Vol. 4 of the Castles and it sounds equally "processed" bright without de-emph.

For me it's a bit moot anyway, since I think they did a good job with the hi-res remasters.

Does anybody here know if the 90's repressings of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells use pre emphasis as well? What I'm looking at here has the 1983 release date on the back cover and has red lettering on the cd. It shares the CDV 2001 cat. number. I think this pressing is from 1992 and it uses the same mastering as the original 1983 European release, but did they remove the pre emphasis from the disc before reissuing it?

Are you positive? Here's a link to a cd with that catalog number on Discogs and it notes that it uses pre emphasis. The 90's disc is a clone of this I believe (it's a Dutch pressing too if that helps.)

Which version of EAC? The latest versions will not detect pre-emphasis that is not flagged in the TOC. You have to use the correct older version and manually detect TOC.

I have a US pressing of Virgin 90589-2 (a club version, no less) that does have pre-emphasis.

    HAS PE:
Billy Joel - Piano Man - CK 32544 Columbia, NOT Designated as "Nice Price" AND with DIDP-050109 (but it might sound better without de-emphasis?!)
Genesis - Genesis(S/T) - ALL? - even the bog-standard American WEA record club version has PE

Men At Work - Cargo - CBS 461023 2, with CDCBS- 25372 and 12 1A in the matrix, Austrian-made (part of 2-CD set in which Business As Usual does NOT have PE)

I have a different Creative Sounds edition for the debut than forum member rjstauber, but do not feel the need to use deemphasis for it as he does. Even when I listen to it with deemphasis, I end up adding treble that I wouldn't when listening to the disc normally. As Kevin5Brown has stated, the debut has an extremely bright mix with harsh cymbals on many pressings. I have the Andy Pearce Deluxe that demonstrates this as well. Deemphasising doesn't properly address this problem because you are reducing frequencies across the spectrum rather than focusing on the cymbals being too bright. One would probably be better off buying a different CD or trying a vinyl pressing rather than messing with the entire frequency spectrum through the deemphasis process.

I also find that my Creative Sounds editions of Paranoid and Children of the Grave (Vol 4) sound great as released without deemphasis. For Master of Reality I recommend the Pearce Deluxe edition.

For Sabotage, my Creative Sounds CD sounds horrible regardless of use of deemphasis. The WB CD sounds good, but I plan to try the original Castle CD eventually.

Your right about the S/T being very bright, so maybe that's why I felt the need to use de-emph. But I had the same feeling with Paranoid, wcich is a darker sounding album. It's a moot point for me anyway, since I have and like the HDtracks releases of the the 70's Ozzy-era albums. They are my to go versions now.

Yeah, I applied some "de-emphasis" to the wav files from that CD and, although I think it sounds "mellower", it is actually dark and the drums sound kinda lifeless.
