I'm not sure. This is a relatively new experience for me in that the original CD releases sound too big, read brittle, bright and booming in both the bass and treble and the vocals just do not sound good and kind of squeezed and definitely smeared.

Rip to PC, burn CD-R, adding pre-emphasis, and it comes out sounding right. Instruments sound like they should with realistic presence and imaging and not muffled as if it didn't require PE in the first place like a couple of other albums I've tried that didn't require it. This is exactly how I discovered that the BTO and Black Sabbath Japan 2fers had this issue. Fortunately I have other early pressings, of these two that can confirm this, but not for Bad Co.

Prior to this 2017 discovery my only PE experience was with discs that had the properly decoded PE and sounded really good until you did a CD-R of them. Then I learned you had to add it back because the ripping program did not recognize and provide it automatically to make a proper sounding CD-R of the albums such as Pink Floyd CP35 DSOTM, The Beatles Abbey Road, Boz Scaggs etc.

Two completely different PE issues but both real.

I have a cdr copy of The Beatles Abbey Road black triangle...and think it sounds fine. I checked the DR and it matches the one that shows 'not' de-emphasized. In other words Greater DR than when pre-emphasis is flagged.

Oh well....it is what it is....and sounds good enough to me so I don't need to spend Big Bucko's on a real one and do the deed ! :D

If the pre-emphasis flags are set on your CDR and you play it on a CD player, it will sound fine as intended. Otherwise it will be super-bright.

I received it from a friend several years ago and really, to me, it sounds fine without being over bright at all. But when I check all the numbers of each tune and compare with what's on the DR site....it correalates with the Black Triangle that isn't pre-emphasized flagged. The DR with all the settings 'correct' show a much lower dynamic range than without.

As I've written, it all depends on the pre-emphasis flags on your CDR (you can check that with ExactAudioCopy) and the way you are playing it (CD player or ripped files). The DR numbers of the files only tell you that the CDR has the pre-emphasized audio.

In case you haven't heard that CD, it's one of those CDs you can pick up cheap that sounds amazing! The dynamics on All Night Long are awesome! Mastered by Bernie Grundman.

Here's a listing for Abbey Road with pre-emphasis applied,

Album details - Dynamic Range Database

And here's another...the same DR as mine when I check my files ripped from my cdr.

Album details - Dynamic Range Database

So...I'm just not sure what I am seeing with my cdr....correctly 'read' or not ?

I tried to explain it twice already, apologies if I'm doing a bad job. Your CDR will play fine if (1) the pre-emphasis flags are set on your CDR, and (2) you are actually the playing it on a CD player. The ripped files are pre-emphasized and super-bright.
