As with two Polydor releases (already on the list) from Vangelis until the recent re-masters still had pre-emphasis; L’Apocalypse Des Animaux Opera Sauvage Kitaro – Oasis (All tracks TOC) Gramavision 18-7010-2 – West Germany PDO – Red Faced cd
I have a pressing from late 80s of same title (cat no R2 79408, pressed by Nimbus Virginia), it is still unremastered but no pre-emphasis anymore
OK, decided to check some Sheffields... Lincoln Mayorga & Amanda McBroom - Growing Up in Hollywood Town - Sheffield Labs CD-13 - Made in Japan London Mayorga and Distinguished Colleagues - The Missing Linc, Volume II - Sheffield Labs CD-15 - Made in Japan James Newton Howard & Friends - Sheffield Labs CD-23 - Made in Japan
Surely, someone has checked Vangelis "Antarctica" [Polydor 815 732-2] for pre-emphasis, yes? Several other Vangelis stage & screen CDs on Polydor from that time period are mastered with pre-emphasis, and "Antarctica" always has struck me as a bright sounding disc. When I ripped my CD several years ago, I expected pre-emphasis flags to pop up, but there were none. Only later did I realize that I had means at that time to check just TOC, not subcode as I do now. And my CD is stashed away in a box in the attic. I will get around to giving my CD a spin again within a few years, but in the meantime, others may be able to corroborate no pre-emphasis flags. AJ
I have checked Antarctica for pre-emphasis and also re-checked China which some have commented to also sounding bright. Vangelis Antarctica (Polydor) no pre-emphasis flags With DR; 13 / 11 / 14 / 16 / 12 / 11 / 12 / 12 Vangelis – China (Polydor) no pre-emphasis flags With DR; 13 / 13 / 15 / 14 / 12 / 12 / 15 / 15 / 13
John Williams "Albéniz: Echoes of Spain" [MK 36679; 38DC-30; CSR Japan for US; pre-emphasis] MK 36679; DIDC 50030 38DC-30 111C1 neat font; CSR 3x center hub; MADE IN JAPAN; pre-emphasis flags in subcode, not TOC; Record manufactured in Japan by CBS/Sony; Recorded at Air Studios, London, October/November 1980; Digitally recorded using the 3M Digital Recorder; Mastered from the original studio digital recording at the CBS Recording Studios, New York, on the CBS DisComputer System; Patent pending 1 smooth sided jewel case AJ
Cecile Licad/Claudio Abbado/Chicago Symphony Orchestra "Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 2; Rhapsody" [DADC; pre-emphasis] MK 38672; DIDC 20014 DIDC 20014 31A5 neat font; DADC center hub; no inverted triangle symbol on disc; pre-emphasis flags in TOC; Digitally recorded using the SOUNDSTREAM system; Record manufactured in Japan by CBS/Sony; smooth sided jewel case AJ
my original post mentioned that these two have flags in TOC, but info is not present on list, so just reminding Amii Ozaki - Miracle (PCCA-00236, reissue from 1991) BIX - Doozgle (ZNCD033, 1993) ----------------------------------------------------------- and another addition - different reissue of same album Amii Ozaki "Miracle" CD - with cat/no D140P6232-1 released 1988, originally a part of box-set with 5 CDs, but I got this CD alone flags in subcode only in this reissue
A little more detail for Tangerine Dream – Exit (already on the list) Blue Face w Black Font Tangerine Dream – Exit – Virgin cdv 2212 (DIDZ 10089) – Manufactured by CBS/Sony Records Inc (embossed around hub) Matrix: DIDZ-10089 11 Pre-emphasis flags in subcode only Silver Face w Red Font Tangerine Dream – Exit – Virgin cdv 2212 Matrix: Nimbus England : (2 dots) Pre-emphasis flag in TOC
I notice a variant blue-face EXIT (21 matrix?) has been previously entered as TOC, so here are screen shots for the DIDZ 10089 11 matrix; Does the placement/location of the flags actually differ between the 11 and 21? The above are from different pc’s, operating systems, software versions and optical drives which probably accounts for track timings +
Certain drives are able to detect SUB Q Mbe. I have two that won't, one that does. Did the bottom one come up without a scan?
Both pc’s indicate from the TOC with EAC from 3 optical drives currently installed, the mainly used pc with EAC V1.3 is TOC only. I have EAC V0.95 prebeta1 on an XP pc which reads TOC + SubQ (Sub detect manually only). Realise there is no need to switch pc's (doh!) as the earlier EAC versions (*could) work fine without issue or conflict on this pc (at least for the id task of pre-emphasis) *Or maybe not as pb1 just froze
@c-eling - Spotted your recommendation for pb3 so fingers crossed – try again Nope pb3 froze also, guess I still need XP after all = No biggie
@WiWavelength Thank you very much for posting this -- I experienced this a couple months ago (was actually the first CD I tried importing after learning about PE ). Maybe this type of warning should be added/noted in @c-eling 's list or as a thread sticky because it's pretty much the most up to date official compilation on the internet. There's also studionibble
new item for the list Yasuko Tomita "Shinshunki / Zenki" Columbia 33C31-7412 (released 1985.04.01) this is repress from 1988 or so, matrix: C31-7412 81 5 10A1 57 7Z flags in subcode only (her next album, released later in 1985, doesn't have PE)
FYI, "Wynton Marsalis" under this original catalog number has at least two masterings -- the first CSR Japan for US mastering with pre-emphasis and a secret remaster with pre-emphasis removed. Cross posted from the CBS label family multiple masterings thread: What early Sony (including CBS, Epic & Portrait) titles have more than one mastering AJ
What a useful thread. I’ve seen Pink Floyd the final cut first Japanese edition to be mentioned as a pre-emphasis album. In other threads, however, it was mentioned that the first American edition of this very same album (made in Japan for America) is the very same edition. So does that mean it has pre emphasis, too? Anyone can confirm that? I’m talking about this edition: Pink Floyd - The Final Cut
Paul McCartney - Pipes of Peace CDP 7 46018 2 (Made in Japan) is already on the list but the W. German version has pre-emphasis as well. Parlophone CDP 7 46018 2 B / Sonopress C-7659 (Made In W. Germany) EAC confirms pre-emphasis.
Bought supposedly earlier pressing with crude matrix 35JC-5-4 1A5 flags in subcode only as well this copy also has no mould text. Can any of you experienced elders of CD collecting world tell me whether it is rarer kind of pressing with crude matrix and no hub text? Prior to buying this I believed all crudies have the earliest hub text "MANUFACTURED BY CBS/SONY RECORDS INC." So am I to believe that there was gap period between this earliest text and 3x repeating later text when there was no text whatsoever? If anyone can shed me more light on CBS/Sony hub texts or their nonpresence, I'd feel grateful. Been trying to understand how things are for a long time and still I am not able to do it as well as I want.
are you mocking me? thank you. I am putting several CD rips from Off The Wall through the de-emphasizing process (with cddeemp) and I must say I find the resulting audio quality rather disappointing. It sounds so muted. The voice gets affected way too much and the snares sound muffled. Can anyone confirm this? I am about to customize my own EQ, but actually I am afraid that the result would deviate too much from the original (after being properly de-emphasized by a CD player). I just want it to be as close to the OG as possible, but this muffled file audio I listened to can't be it. I feel like the de-emph curve that all programs apply takes out too much of the high frequencies. Can anybody help?
