I just got myself the first Japan 10-track Synchronicity, 38XB-2. It has preemphasis. (The 11-track 38XB-2 does not.)

Also Columbia 450088 2 (matrix: CDCBS-85529 41 MASTERED BY DADC AUSTRIA [+mastered & debossed bar codes]). This is a relatively recent pressing, too -- it has an IFPI stamper code, which implies 1996 or later.

I have this one, and read somewhere on here that the pre-emphasis isn't flagged correctly - and isn't decoded on playback.
Added some more I own and can confirm. It goes without saying that just about all the early 35DPs have preemphasis, but I know there are a few that don't, so I won't assume anything... It's both the Japan made for UK (Facd 100) and Japan for Japan (33C38-7413) which share the same mastering and, of course, the dreaded pre-emphasis. I must break down and learn how to properly rip pre-emph disks to flac!
I don't claim to know anything about this subject, so if I am asking a stupid question bear with me. If you take a disc with preemphasis and turn it into a flac file and then burn a disc, does it sound better, the same or worse?
Worse -- unless you remember to set the preemphasis flag on the new CD when you burn it. This is not difficult to do with the right software (e.g. Toast), but it's obscure enough that most people would miss it. The flag on the CD does not affect the PCM music data, which has been pre-emphasized and will sound that way if you just rip it off the disc. Its up to the CD player to see the flag and filter the music with its own de-emphasis. So when you take the data and put it on a new disc, you have to set the flag -- otherwise it will sound trebley and bad.
How do you know if your CD player is using preemphasis? In other words, if I have a disc with PE will it sound bad on a newer disc player? Forgive me, I am trying to understand this.
Almost all CD players properly de-emphasize a disc flagged as pre-emphasized. The "problem" only occurs when ripping tracks. The flag gets dropped in that case.
if the pre-emph is not de-emphasized, the sound will be super bright and/or have major tape hiss.... most CD players have the "Redbook" standard for playing CDs, which includes the ability to read the PE flag and apply proper de-emphasis. ripping software will not recognize the flag. there are work-arounds, but they are not easy enough for me....if only dBpoweramp would just do it for me when I hit the "Rip" button!!!
Right, it's technically a Redbook requirement for any CD player to have proper pre-emphasis detection and de-emphasis ability, if it wants to be fully compliant. I would say 99% of CD and DVD players do it correctly. (Just a guess.) One way to tell is to rip the CD and compare that music with the actual CD is a player. If the rip sounds bright and the CD doesn't, then your player is behaving correctly.
My two CD players (Cambridge Audio and Denon) don't do de-emphasis, and I'm sure most of the newer players don't do it either. To play those CDs correctly I rip them to the computer and use the SoX software to de-emphasize them. I found it is the best sounding program to do this. Link to this software in post #118 of this thread (and many thanks to member Zilog Jones for providing it! )
Maybe this is a stupid question but how do I know if my digital player (OPPO BDP-83SE) decodes pre-emphasis properly?
play one of the CDs on the list and if it sounds jacked up (harsh highs, ridiculous tape hiss), then the Oppo isn't de-emphasizing..... pls post back here with your conclusion....i may be getting the SE and it darn well better have the proper Redbook necessary to recognize the pre-emph flag!!
This one was a surprise: John Oswald - Plunderphonic (Mystery Laboratory, no cat #) It's also only the second time I've found the DCP flag set on a commercially-pressed CD, though of course that makes perfect sense in context.
Found another one while ripping my collection. Big Audio Dynamite - "This Is Big Audio Dynamite" Columbia CK 40220 matrix:E1 1A CK40220 04
