NOTE: This thread is derived from a related thread in the Audio Hardware Forum concerning the difference between Sony's and others Redbook PCM digital recorders and the non Redbook digital recorders that were developed prior to the Redbook Standard.in the 1970s. A continuing discussion of the hardware differences is in this thread: Denon PCM Encoding in 1970s. Is it different than Sony CD PCM? »

What started my interest in this area was listening to a Denon PCM digital LP from 1977 of a string quartet and being struck by how much more realistic the sonics were compared to the Redbook digitally sourced LPs in my collection from the 1980s. Further listening and acquiring additional 1970s non-Redbook digital LPs confirmed my initial impression. The clearest and most controlled comparison was with Telarc digitally sourced LPs made with the Soundstream Digital Recorder in the 1970s with a later Telarc LP from 1987 which used the Sony PCM 1630 recorder. Despite the same recording team and mic'ing, the sonic advantages of the LPs from the 1970s was manifest compared with the 1987 LP using a Redbook recorder. Denon PCM Encoding in 1970s. Is it different than Sony CD PCM? »

The Compact Disk Redbook Standard was published in 1980 and the first Compact Disk was produced in August, 1982. However prior to those dates, other companies as well as Sony had developed digital recorders with non Redbook sampling rates from 32k and 13 bits to 50k and 16 bits. The four principal non-Redbook recorder systems were the Denon (023R, 034R and 035R in 1972-1979), the Soundstream Digital Recorder (1976), the 3M Digital Recorder (1978) and the Mitsubishi X80.(1980).

This current thread is solely concerned with creating a discography of LPs confirmed as being digitally recorded using one of the 4 digital recorders listed above: Denon, Soundstream, 3M and Mitsubishi. I am limiting it to LPs recorded and issued prior to 1982 to ensure that no Redbook digital recorder, mixer or editor was used in the recording process. Note that I have not yet been able to identify any LPs sourced from the Mitsubishi X80 in 1980 and 1981. I ask anyone to post other pre Redbook digital LPs that are not already in this Discography. I have arranged the listing by year since there were technical developments throughout this period.

  4. Corrections:

The correct name of the performer is “Stomu Yamash’ta.”

I do not believe that 3) above, Uzo: The World of Stomu Yamash’ta 2, is a PCM recording. It is part of the Nippon Columbia Master Sonic series, but nowhere on the album artwork or inserts does it indicate that it is a PCM recording. 1) and 3) above are also part of the Master Sonic series, but tout their PCM recording in multiple places on the vinyl outwork and inserts.

Another release under this first section to add is:

TD-3009 Steve Marcus + Jiro Inagaki & Soul Media (Arranged by Masahiko Sato) "Master Sonic - Demonstration Record" Sampler Promo Nippon Columbia, released February, 1972

(note—it contains the same recordings on 1) Side A above, except that Side A of the promo is the PCM, non-distortion cutting and Side N is the analog, regular cutting)

  5. Also, as far as Telarc discs recorded using Soundstream equipment, I believe there are over 100, as I alerted Concord/Fantasy to a Telarc enthusiasts web page containing a list of the recordings and asked Concord/Fantasy to release a box set of the Telarc Soundstream recordings to compete with the RCA Living Stereo and Mercury Living Presence boxes.

The constraint is that this discography is limited to Telarc digital LPs recorded and issued before 1982. I tried to list all that I could verify through 1981 but if I missed some by all means add them here or show me the site where they are listed. However those issued in 1982 or later probably or definitely have Redbook editing or recorders.

Thanks for finding an additional Delos. We are looking for Delos 3002 and 3004 also.

OK I was able to track down Delos digital LPs not in the Discograhy above. I could verify Soundstream for Delos 3004 and assume it for Delos 3002. The Delos digital LPs between DMS 3007 and 3017 are also likely all Soundstream, recording and editing, although it is not clear if the LPs issued in 1982 but recorded in 1981 have any Redbook editing.

Delos DMS 3002 1979 The Sound Of Trumpets. Gerard Schwarz, The NY Trumpet Ensemble.

Delos DMS 3004 1979 Ravel Quartet in F/Bartok Quartet #3. Sequoia String Quartet.

    -----
Delos DMS 3007 1980 Vivaldi: The Four Seasons. Gerard Schwarz, Los Angeles Chamber Orch.

    -------
Delos DMS 3008 1981 Shostakovich: Piano Concerto # 1/Prokofiev: Classical Symphony. Gerard Schwarz, Carol Rosenerger, Los Angeles Chamber Orch.

    Delos DMS 3009
1981 Beethoven Piano Sonatas Op. 57 Appassionata/ Op. 111 Carol Rosenberger

Delos DMS 3010 1981 Handel: Water Music. Gerard Schwarz

    -----
The remaining LP titles listed below were apparently recorded in 1981 but released in 1982. It is likely they have no Redbook editing but it can't be totally verified.

Delos DMS 3011 1982 Dvorak: Serenade Op. 22/ Waldsruhe Op. 60/ Notturno Op. 48. Gerard Schwarz, Los Angeles Chamber Orch.

Delos DMS 3012 1982 Mozart: Symphonies 40/41. Gerard Schwarz, Los Angeles Chamber Orch.

    Delos DMS 3013 1982 ????

Delos DMS 3014 1982 Stravinsky: L'Histoire du Soldat. Gerard Schwarz, Carol Rosenberger, Los Angeles Chamber Orch.

Delos DMS 3015 1982 Tchaikovsky: Symphony 5. Ormandy, The Philadelphia Orch.

Delos DMS 3016 1982 Tchaikovsky: Symphony 6. Ormandy, The Philadelphia Orch.

Delos DMS 3017 1982 Beethoven: Symphony 6. Gerard Schwarz, Chamber Symphony of New York.

  9. I was talking about Telarc’s *Soundstream* 16/50 LP’s, not anything recorded on 16/44.1 hardware (i.e., Sony PCM-F1, etc.). There were over 100 recorded on the Soundstream 16/50 system. I’ll get the link for you as soon as I find it.

Thanks but if they are after 1981 we can't be totally sure they don't involve post recording editing on Sony Redbook. If they can be verified as all no Redbook then I will include in Discography. Thanks again.

  11. I just checked my correspondence with John Baldi at Concord Music Group and there were about 50 Soundstream LP's, many of which were never released on CD. Sorry about my earlier incorrect reference to 100 LP's--my faulty memory of an email conversation from 6 years ago. Why do you think there would be any redbook processing involved on the Telarc LP's, especially in the Soundstream days? I just don't get where you are coming from. We aren't talking about CD releases that were pressed to LP as an afterthought. We are talking about the 16/50 Sounstream LP's issued on a pioneering digital LP label.

  12. Also, Erato released quite a few albums from 16/50 Soundstream recordings. I'm not sure if they are on your list.

I mean in the years after Redbook was released and labels lined up the handwriting was on the wall. Telarc was using Sony gear in the mid 80s and everyone was issuing CDs. Telarc and Denon had no choice since there was no Telarc Redbook or Denon Redbook. I am not talking prior to 1982 where I have every confidence that Soundstream (or Denon) was used start to finish at their sessions. 1982 on it is a question as to whether Sony editors were used at some point in the mixing. So I would need more proof from 1982 onwards.

There are about 32 Telarcs already listed for 1978-81.

  14. Another addition under Soundstream, 1977, Folk:

Romar Records RPS-107701 Karen Gibbs: Window Panes

Window Panes was recorded in analog but was mastered using the Soundstream equipment, much like how Fleetwood Mac, Tusk, was done two years later.

  15. Yes, I think the missing 20-30 should be included.

As noted here, Soundstream edited and mastered their recordings:
Journal on the Art of Record Production » Soundstream: The Introduction of Commercial Digital Recording in the United States

There is just no reason to believe--at least, no reason for me to believe--that any Telarc LP's recorded using Soundstream equipment had any additional redbook processing.

This is a quote from your article link:

In 1980, Soundstream merged with Digital Recording Corporation (DRC) and became DRC/Soundstream. Together they developed a consumer digital player that used an optical card to store music.53 Soundstream editor Sydney Davis notes: ‘they owned a business card style memory device that would play back the 1812 Overture at 50 kHz.’54 In an effort to expand, Soundstream also opened an editing facility at Paramount Pictures in Hollywood and one at Bertelsmann in Germany. However, this work was abandoned when the compact disc, developed by Sony and Phillips, became the mass-market consumer choice (Fine: 2008, 1-2). Philosophically and financially, the introduction of the compact disc was a problem for the company because it brought about the redundancy of Soundstream’s optical card based home playback technology and because Soundstream staff regarded the standard 44.1 kHz sampling rate as audibly inferior to their catalogue of 50 kHz masters. Although equipment was developed that allowed for recordings made at 50 kHz to be converted during transfer to the standard mastering consoles of the time, such as the Sony 1600, Soundstream editor Sydney Davis recalls: ‘we couldn’t compete against Sony. We lost the high end of all that stuff because they brought it down to 44.1 kHz. That was my first experience of what I would consider a technical tragedy.’55 As a result, Soundstream ceased to operate in 1983.

So I fully accept that Soundstream made every effort to control the process from start to finish. However they were not a record label. The record label could get their tape and decide to do further editing on a different (Sony) system before issuing the LP and CD. However since Soundstream bit the dust in 1983 I agree that the concern is a minor one since only a few Soundstream titles were issued in 1982 and 83.

I'm sure this has already been posted, but this article is interesting (if a little brief) and includes a list of "digital firsts": http://www.aes.org/aeshc/pdf/fine_dawn-of-digital.pdf

I've been listening to Archie Shepp's On Green Dolphin Street (the first all-digital recording made the in USA intended for commercial release) and it sounds very nice (I have the 1991 Denon CD). The sound is pretty smooth and instrument separation is good and clear. I'm not sure if this is due to the use of Denon's small portable PCM recording system, the DN-034R, or (more likely IMO) production and recording set-up. Nevertheless, it has encouraged me to seek out more recordings from these sessions!

Came upon this page while researching for the Wikipedia "Digital recording" page which I periodically update when I find new information. You have done a lot of research!

    A few small corrections/elaborations:
    • Steve Marcus "Something" (Nippon Columbia NCB-8003) was recorded January 25, 1971, not 1970. It is the first RELEASED digital recording (sometime early 1972).
    • Stomu Yamash'ta's "The World of Stomu Yamashta" (Nippon Columbia NCC-8004-N) and "Uzu: The World of Stomu Yamash'ta-2" (NCC-8015-N) were recorded live January 11, 1971 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Cultural Hall, making them the first RECORDED commercial digital recordings, but they weren't released until after Steve Marcus
    • I *believe* all three of these were released as 45-rpm LPs. The total playing time of each is around 30 minutes
    • Both of these recordings were done by Denon engineer Dr. Takeaki Anazawa on the experimental NHK 2-channel PCM encoder 32kHz/13-bit, in one pass, with no editing possible
    • "Satisfied that PCM digital was an improvement over analog tape" (per the Thomas Fine article), Denon created their own PCM device in 1972, the DN-23R, running at 47.25kHz/13-bit and 8-channels, using an Hitachi 4-head VTR for storage
    • First recording with the new Denon DN-23R was the Smetana Quartet's reading of Mozart string quartets KV458 & KV421, April 24-26, 1972.

I ran across different Denon PCM series with the prefix ZX, JF, WP and WX. The latter 3 series seem to be devoted to Domestic Japan issues only.

ZX 7018-ND Kalyani Roy - The Virtuoso of Sitar: Raga Todi, Raga Durga, Raga Mishra Kamaj.

    JF 7005 Jenny Tseng 1981

WP 7008 Goro Yamaguchi - The World of Shamkachi
    WX 7535 Shamisen 1980

At least two LPs in Nonesuch Records Digital LP series were recorded with the 3M Digital Recorder. Nonesuch used several different digital recorders in this series including Sony and an unspecified JVC system.

Nonesuch D 79013 J S Bach: Wedding Cantata. Judith Nelson, Joshua Rifkin, Bach Ensemble 1980

Nonesuch D 79018 Richard Strauss/Arthur Honegger: Duet Concertina/ Concerto Da Camera. Gerald Schwartz, LA Chamber Orch. 1981

  25. There is no evidence that the LP "Uzu: The World of Stomu Yamash'ta-2" (NCC-8015-N) was cut from a PCM tape. Unlike Something and The World of Stomu Yamash’ta, there are no references to PCM recording on the album jacket or the album insert, although it does explain that the album is a “low distortion cutting.” All three LP’s are in Nippon Columbia’s MasterSonic Series. On the first two albums, PCM Recording and Low Distortion Cutting are prominently listed, while on “Uzo,” only Low Distortion Cutting is advertised.
