You think? I never viewed it that way - "Avatar" is more commonly compared to Disney's "Pocahontas" or "Dances with Wolves"!

The movie Happy Feet did very well. It was, at the least, the top grossing movie for 3 wks around Thanksgiving 2006. Lots of singing by those penguins.

I saw Dory, The Shallows (which you guys forgot apparently), and Secret Life of Pets (another apparently overlooked one).

All became big hits (Shallows doing almnost as well as Jaws, though falling off)

Saw Shallows, Blake Lively's second starring (NOT co-starring!) role, and her first since 2015's "The Age of Adaline",which I also saw.

    All of these, very good.

I saw it yesterday and enjoyed it (including the dog whose name Universal swiped from Sony's surfer girl, Gidget..just kidding, Universal Pictures, if any of you guys read this. Jenny Slate's cute and funny with that voice..also used for Miss Bellwether in Disney's "Zootopia", another major hit.)

UPA's television "Mr.Magoo" series used this--Magoo (Jim Backus) had a pet hamster, dog, and cat, all named after Shakespeare characters!

Enjoyed Shallows as well. Did what it was supposed to do very well. A good popcorn movie. Wouldn't see it twice, but a great one time watch for me. A big fan of Blake...don't know what it is about her but she is awfully sexy and she did a great job...very believable. Not sure a shark would be quite that smart, but I will give the film a pass on that! Some good films this summer. No doubt I will enjoy Secret Life tomorrow. I was looking forward to the ID4 sequel but you guys killed it for me, along with all the horrible reviews. Guess I should thank everyone for not allowing me to waste my time or money.

I always heard it derided most for being so similar to "Fern Gully!"

What the huh? "Jaws" was one of the most successful movies of all-time, a complete culture-impacting phenomenon - "Shallows" is a good little movie that's reached a small, niche audience.

How can you state it's doing "almost as well" as "Jaws"? "Jaws" made $260 million in 1975 dollars! That'd be more than one billion dollars today!

"Shallows" has made $45 million to date - or a little more than 1/6th what "Jaws" earned 41 years ago!

I can't think what the obvious few exceptions are. I actually cannot think of any movie I've ever seen that if I heard a sequel was about to be released would make me say "Oh, boy, can't wait for that! Take my money please!".

Well, as I said, it's a very short list as I pretty much agree with you. The only one's I can think of are the Indy films, and they could have stopped with the third one, and the Star Wars movies...I did like all of them. The Godfather moves...liked all of them too. But can't think of anything else. I didn't think The Hunger Games was strong enough for three films.

Edit: looking at the other poster's list, I have to include Toy Story and Back to the Future. I guess there are a lot!
