Ok, so I went back a 3rd time and compared the HD and CD releases (I need to stop now).

    Here we go...

Inarguable improvements over the original CD's

    1979 - Prince
    1980 - Dirty Mind

Subtle improvements over the original CD's (better/newer A-D transfers)

    1981 - Controversy
    1984 - Purple Rain

    Worse than the original CD's

    1978 - For You
    1982 - 1999
1986 - Around the World in a Day

    To0 close to call

    1986 - Parade

For Purple Rain, I recently compared as well. They tamed the treble with the HDTracks, but IMO they took it too far. I prefer the original, but I think the optimum EQ is around halfway from the original and the HDTracks.

So how big of an idiot would I be if I bought the Prince HDtracks but then downsampled them to 16/44.1? It's the better mastering that I'm after and I've never noticed a difference between Hi-Res and Redbook. I don't have the space for Hi Res (that's right, I DON'T have the space...in 2017).

I've done it an never looked back. Aside from Controversy, they're the best masterings of Prince's albums.

I agree, though I'd give the best mastering award to the original vinyl, most of which were cut by Bernie Grundman. Certainly these are the best digital versions available!

Thanks, but as I am in Europe now, it is not working. Really thinking if DSD exist somewhere ?

  10. I just emailed with Kevin Gray. He confirmed that his mastering is only the vinyl. He imagined that someone "in house" at WB did the HDTracks remasters.

Of course pointing your finger to the "best" mastering is system dependent. So, it's all with a grain of salt. The best we can do is arrive at a general consensus.

That doesn't look like it's happened in this thread. :)
